Greece’s Economy is Showing Signs of a Long-Awaited Rebound

Output grew by 2.3 percent inyearly terms between January and March, marking a fifth straight quarter of expansion according to Elstat, the statistics service. Analysts said the first quarter figure, the highest recorded in the past decade, matches projections by the EU and International Monetary Fund that gross domestic product would increase this year by around 2 per cent.

Exports showed a year-over-year rise of 9.5 per cent, while imports declined by 2.7 per cent. Gross fixed capital formation fell by 8.3 per cent on an annual basis, according to Elstat. “We’re seeing indications that the economy is turning around but it’s not a robust trend yet,” said Nikos Vettos, director of the Athens think-tank IOVE.

Thomas Cook will invest around €150million ($173 million) in the Greek tourism sector

Thomas Cook, one of the world’s biggest tour operators, has pledged to invest around €150 million ($173million) in the Greek tourism sector this year.

At a news conference held at the official launch of Thomas Cook’s new hotel concept named Cook’s Club in Hersonissos on Crete, CEO Peter Fankhauser reaffirmed the tour operator’s commitment to Greece. He said the group had opened up four new destinations and added more than 34 new routes in the last two years, making it the largest holiday company operating in the country.

Speaking alongside Greek tourism minister Elena Kountoura, Fankhauser said the company hopes to operate between 10 and 15 Cook’s Club hotels by summer 2019. He estimated that the company will send three million tourists to Greece this year, up more than one third on two years ago.

Greek Prime Minister predicted that the tourism industry record will be broken again this year.

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said 2018 will be the best year in the history of Greek tourism and listed a series of actions the government has planned to boost the sector further.

“We are expected to once again break the record for Greek tourism this year, with expectations referring to some 32 million foreign visitors,” the Greek PM said during the 26th General Assembly of the Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE). According to PM Tsipras, the latest tourism receipts suggest that the incoming tourist traffic to Greece is already up by 12.8 percent compared to last year. He also noted that tourism may have been the only industry that resisted the sweeping wave of the deep recession that hit Greece and managed togrow. PM Tsipras assured the audience of Greek tourism professionals that Greece continues to exceed economic expectations, and the government plans to reduce taxes for businesses – including those in tourism – and for citizens.

Kountoura specifically stated that more than 25,000 new beds were added to major four- and five-star hotels of over 300 beds each, according to the data of the ministry’s Special Agency for the Promotion and Licensing of Tourism Investments.
