“遠”，在英文裡有很多種說法，也就是far、distant跟remote，意義雖然相近，常常可以互換使用，但用法上還是有點小差別需要注意!

FAR

far可視為非正式、口語的用法，相對而言使用範圍更廣更復雜，同時能代表”時間、空間上的距離遙遠”以及”(差)很多”的意思，視其搭配詞或短語而定，幾個例子如下:

1.I don’t live far away from here.

我住在離這不遠的地方（表示空間上距離遙遠）

2. She is far and away(by far) the smartest one in the class

她是班上最聰明的學生（固定短語 far and away=by far, undoubtedly 明顯，顯而易見的意思）

3. As far as I am concerned, this house is too expensive.

這房子對我而言太貴了（固定短語 as far as 就我看來）

4. He traveled far and wide(far and near, near and far) in search of his missing wife.

他走了很遠很遠來找他失蹤的老婆（固定短語： far and wide=far and near 到處）

5. Far be it from me to complain, but it’s getting hot in here.

我不想抱怨，但這裡面越來越熱了（短語far be it form 表示否定 意思是我不會，我不是）

REMOTE

remote則是「遠」較為正式的用法，一般來說和distant可以交換使用，意義也大多互相重疊，可以指「時間空間上的遙遠」以及「人際關係的疏遠」，但remote的距離也常帶有「偏遠、偏僻」的意思，有時也用來形容「機會微乎其微」。例子如下:

1.I traveled to a remote village in my vacation.

我放假時去了一個偏遠的村莊（表示空間上的遙遠）

2.That accident happened in the remote past.

那個意外發生在遙遠的過去（表示時間上的遙遠）

3. I’ve only got a remote chance to be promoted.

我升遷的機會微乎其微（形容機會微乎其微）

另外，remote當作名詞就是遙控器的意思。

DISTANT

distant的意思就比較單純了，單指「時間、空間距離的遙遠」以及「人際關係的疏遠」，distant所指稱的通常是相較於另兩個詞更為「具體」，或就算不具體也已知相當遙遠的距離，在表示距離的數字後面也只會用distant，而不會用remote或是far，例子如下:

My house is about 10 kilometers distant from the station.

我家離車站大約十公里遠（表示具體距離只能用distant）

值得注意的是，in the not too distant past/future這一固定用語中須用 distant，但在沒有 not too 的 in the distant/remote past/future 中，兩者卻又可互換。
