Tomato sauce jars to turn into "tomato architecture"

An endless red waterfall of tomatoes will surprise visitors at the new headquarters (總部) for Mutti — one of the world's leading tomato companies that processes (加工) 300,000 tons of tomatoes every year. Carlo Ratti Associati (CRA) just announced their competition winning design for the new factory in Italy that playfully makes a strong connection with something they call "tomato architecture (建築)." In addition to public viewing areas for the live processing of tomatoes — up to 5,500 tons per day — the visitor center's walls will be made up of thousands of glass tomato sauce jars (番茄醬瓶).
Set near Parma in Italy's "Food Valley," Mutti's new 2.5 million-square-foot headquarters will examine the company's equipment carefully and make necessary repairs, then open up the factory to visitors. The most impressive part of the design will be the tomato sauce jar walls. The Mutti logo (標識) will mark the walls, which will be lit at night. The new visitor center will include a restaurant showing the food processing stages, and a public place where people can watch millions of tomatoes falling into wash containers.
"We were inspired by Pablo Neruda's poem 'Oda al Tomate', which is also one of Mutti's slogans (標語). 'La calle se llenó de tomates' ('The street was filled with tomatoes') is a way to show how the factory can open up,"explains Carlo Ratti, founding partner of CRA and director of the Senseable City Lab at MIT. "We imagined the Mutti plant to be like an open-air theater: both open to the public, and to the nearby scenery." A 240,000-square-foot park will also be opened around the repaired factory. The building work is planned to be completed in 2023.
