Abstract: The current outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has become a global crisis due to its quick and wide spread over the world. A good understanding of the dynamic of the disease would greatly enhance the control and prevention of COVID-19. In this talk, I will discuss a novel stochastic model we proposed which aims to account for the unique transmission dynamicsof COVID-19 and capture the effects of intervention measures. Our major findings includes: (1) instead of aberration, there is a remarkable amount of asymptomatic virus carriers, (2) a virus carrier with symptoms is approximately twice more likely to pass the disease to others than that of an asymptomatic virus carrier. We also apply our model to predict the size of outbreaks in some major countries as well as the risk of oversea imported cases. This talk is based on joint works with Dr. Chong You, Mr. Zhenhao Cai, Mr. Jiarui Sun, Mr. Wenjie Hu, and Dr. Xiaohua Zhou.

Abstract:Let (\mathrm{\Sigma}^{n-1},\gamma) be an orientable (n-1)-dimensional Riemannian manifold, H be a positive function on \mathrm{\Sigma}^{n-1}, it is natural to ask: under what conditions is it that \gamma is induced by a Riemannian metric g with nonnegative scalar curvature, for example, defined on \mathrm{\Omega}^n, and H is the mean curvature of \mathrm{\Sigma} in (\mathrm{\Omega}^n,g) with respect to the outward unit normal vector? Recently, M.Gromov proposed several conjectures on this question. In this first part of this talk I will describe what the conjectures are and survey some known results in this direction when n=3; In the second part of the talk, I will present my several recent results on this which joint with Wang Wenlong, Wei guodong , and Zhu jintian. I will also propose some problems relate to Gromov’s conjectures.

Abstract: We study a class of interacting particle systems that may be used for optimization. By considering the mean-field limit one obtains a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation. This equation exhibits a gradient structure in probability space, based on a modified Wasserstein distance which reflects particle correlations: the Kalman-Wasserstein metric. This setting gives rise to a methodology for calibrating and quantifying uncertainty for parameters appearing in complex computer models which are expensive to run, and cannot readily be differentiated. This is achieved by connecting the interacting particle system to ensemble Kalman methods for inverse problems. This is joint work with Alfredo Garbuno-Inigo (Caltech), Wuchen Li (UCLA) and Andrew Stuart (Caltech).

Abstract: We first develop random batch methods for classical and quantum interacting particle systems with large number of particles. These methods use small but random batches for particle interactions, thus the computational cost is reduced from O(N^2) per time step to O(N), for a system with N particles with binary interactions. For classical particles we give a particle number independent error estimate under some special interactions. For quantum N-body Schrodinger equation, we obtain, for pair-wise random interactions, a convergence estimate for the Wigner transform of the single-particle reduced density matrix of the particle system at time t that is uniform in N > 1 and independent of the Planck constant\hbar.
We then introduce a stochastic interacting particle consensus system for global optimization of high dimensional non-convex functions. This algorithm does not use gradient of the function thus is suitable for non-smooth functions. We prove that under dimension-independent conditions on the parameters and initial data the algorithms converge to the neighborhood of the global minimum almost surely.

Hodge theory is an important tool in the study of topology of complex algebraic varieties. Recently, due to the work of Karim Adiprasito, Matthew Baker, June Huh and Eric Katz and Botong Wang, etc., it has found several surprising applications to some well known problems in the theory of matroids.
In this expository talk, we will introduce related background and idea, and describe how this fancy approach of Hodge theory can be applied to solve a problem in combinatorics. We will also try to presentsome detailsifpossible.

報告摘要:
As the “quantum supremacy” was declared by Google in 2019, we are now in the “noisy intermediate-scale quantum” (NISQ) era. What can a numerical analyst do with a quantum computer (if it works)? This talk discusses some recent progresses on quantum algorithms for solving linear algebra problems. In particular, we introduce simple algorithms based on adiabatic quantum computing (AQC) to solve Ax=bAx=b on a quantum computer, with near-optimal complexity ~O(κ/ϵ)O~(κ/ϵ). Here κκ is the condition number, and ϵϵ is the target accuracy. No prior knowledge on quantum computing is needed.
[INS COLLOQUIUM] Mean Field Limits of Weakly Interacting Diffusions and Applications

報告摘要
In this talk I will present some recent results on mean field limits for interacting diffusions. We will study, in particular, problems for which the mean field limit exhibits phase transitions, in the sense that the limiting McKean-Vlasov PDE can have more than one stationary states, at sufficiently strong interaction strengths. We provide a general characterization of first and second order phase transitions for mean field dynamics on the torus and we study fluctuations around the mean field limit. As a case study, we consider the combined mean field/homogenization limit for noisy Kuramoto oscillators. Applications of this type of dynamics to models for opinion formation and to sampling and optimization algorithms are also discussed.
