Museums show support for virus fight via cultural relics

A special event tagged #文物系荊楚祝福頌祖國#(bless Wuhan and China through cultural relics) went viral on Chinese social media.

The event was organized by China’s National Cultural Heritage Administration, with support from domestic museums, cultural departments or organizations of archaeological sites, to deliver messages of support and encouragement to our epidemic-stricken motherland through cultural relics, especially to Wuhan city.

For now, hundreds of museums have participated in the event, posting specially-made pictures of precious relics with the same tag on their official accounts in Weibo, China’s twitter-like social media. The relics are carefully selected and most of them are with auspicious meanings, showing people’s blessings to Wuhan.

Museums in Guangzhou city, including the Archaeological Site Museum of Nanyue Palace, the Museum of the Nanyue King of Western Han Dynasty and Southern Han Mausoleums Museum, also expressed their support for China through encouraging posters. Now, let’s check out some of them!

The Jade Drinking Vessel in Rhinoceros Horn Shape is especially worth mentioning here. Unearthed from the Nanyue King' s tomb, this high-profile vessel was carved from a whole piece of green and white jade, to form the shape of a rhinoceros horn.

It is said that this kind of vessel first appeared in the Crete Island, Greece, as early as in 1,500 BC, and was introduced to China through the ancient Maritime Silk Road as sea trade began to flourish 2,000 years ago.

It is expected that, through the event, Chinese citizens can better appreciate the values of the cultural relics and draw strength from the profound Chinese culture to fight against the novel coronavirus epidemic.
