在英國英語中，Excuse me和sorry的意思並不相同。
當我們要說的話或要做的事可能弓起對方不快時，我們一般先說一聲Excuse me。sorry則用於說完話或做完事以後，表示歉意。
在我們要打攪別人或打斷別人，或者要引起別人注意時也常用Excuse me 。
Excuse me, could I get past?...Oh, sorry, did I step on your foot?勞駕，可以讓我過去嗎?······啊，對不起，我踩你的腳了吧?
Excuse me, could you tell me the way to the station?勞駕，請問去車站怎麼走?
除了sorry之外，我們要道歉時還可以說I beg your pardon(更正式些)。(在美國英語中，Excuseme和Pardon me常常都用來表示道歉。
Sorry, I hope you haven't been waiting long.對不起。你沒有等太久吧。
l beg your pardon, I didn't realize this was your seat.對不起，我不知道這座位原來是你的。
如果我們沒有聽清或沒有聽懂別人的話，一般要說Sorry?
What?(非正式)或者(I beg your)pardon?而且，都要用升調來說。
美國人還可以說Pardon me?或者Please?
“It's the plumber at the door.”“Sorry?”.“I said it's the
plumber.”——水暖工來了。
——你說什麼?-
——我說水暖工來了。
“see you on Tuesday”'
“What?”
“See you on Tuesday.”
——星期二再見。
——你說什麼?
——星期二再見。
“You are going deaf.”
"I beg you pardon?"
——你耳朵變聾了。
——你說什麼？
