Duan was reputed as the "three-time recreator of the Republic of China" as he telegraphed the Qing emperor to abdicate, opposed Yuan Shikai's bid for the throne and sent troops to suppress the Zhangxu Restoration. According to proved historical facts, when the "March 18 Massacre" of 1926 happened, Duan was not in the Palace of the Chief Executive, nor did he ever order the shooting. Now there have been some publications there to prove that Duan had been wronged.
