光緒元寶是清代光緒年間特有的一種貨幣。有著清朝貨幣特徵，由於當時時局不穩定，因此幾乎在全國的各個省都有專門的貨幣鑄造廠。因此我們會發現那個時代的貨幣上都有鮮明的鑄字，標明是哪個省的造幣廠鑄造的。其中最典型的就是廣東省造幣廠鑄造的光緒元寶。

廣東省造光緒元寶庫平七錢二分鑄後因“洋文列於中國年號之外，體制尚有未合”引起非議而停鑄。於是重新設計第三版廣東省造光緒元寶銀幣，將漢字置於銀幣的正面，英文置於銀幣的背面，銀幣正面中央珠圈內鐫滿漢文“光緒元寶”四字，珠圈外上端鐫漢字“廣東省造”，下端鐫漢字“庫平七錢二分”，背面中央鐫蟠龍圖，上端鐫英文KWANG-TUNGPROVINCE（廣東省），下端鐫7MACEAND2CANDAREENS（七錢二分）。有“造”字牛口與土口造之分，“錢”字出頭金與不出頭之分，光緒16年4月，第三版廣東光緒元寶七錢二分銀幣系列正式鑄行，後經清廷下令作法定銀幣，成晚清中國自鑄銀幣之典範。此後各省群起效尤，競相設廠鼓鑄，迅速在全國展開，近代中國大規模鑄造機制龍洋由此開始。

以此件廣東省造光緒銀質金幣為例，此錢幣為鮮明的金幣質地，材質無疑。百餘年來，其包漿純老，在特定光照角度下，已然可見五彩綻放。金色呈熟舊之感，自然天成，老態無掩。其幣身，字口清晰，筆劃圓凸，圈珠齒顆粒分明排列規則，邊齒規範，深淺適度。背蟠龍紋模打較深，龍鱗片甲較為豐滿分明，整個雲龍紋飾凸起，頂面凸圓，線條清晰。一言以蔽之，此乃機制正模之樣作矣。

由於當時清政府條件所限，大多數光緒元寶均由著名的英國倫敦伯明翰造幣有限公司的機器所造，可謂中西結合，自然也多了一些西方文化和色彩。但是清政府滅亡後，機器也隨之銷燬，所以後續無法再造，流通和存世的數量隨時間逐年減少，這也造成光緒元寶如今價格高昂的原因之一。
