光绪元宝是清代光绪年间特有的一种货币。有着清朝货币特征，由于当时时局不稳定，因此几乎在全国的各个省都有专门的货币铸造厂。因此我们会发现那个时代的货币上都有鲜明的铸字，标明是哪个省的造币厂铸造的。其中最典型的就是广东省造币厂铸造的光绪元宝。

广东省造光绪元宝库平七钱二分铸后因“洋文列于中国年号之外，体制尚有未合”引起非议而停铸。于是重新设计第三版广东省造光绪元宝银币，将汉字置于银币的正面，英文置于银币的背面，银币正面中央珠圈内镌满汉文“光绪元宝”四字，珠圈外上端镌汉字“广东省造”，下端镌汉字“库平七钱二分”，背面中央镌蟠龙图，上端镌英文KWANG-TUNGPROVINCE（广东省），下端镌7MACEAND2CANDAREENS（七钱二分）。有“造”字牛口与土口造之分，“钱”字出头金与不出头之分，光绪16年4月，第三版广东光绪元宝七钱二分银币系列正式铸行，后经清廷下令作法定银币，成晚清中国自铸银币之典范。此后各省群起效尤，竞相设厂鼓铸，迅速在全国展开，近代中国大规模铸造机制龙洋由此开始。

以此件广东省造光绪银质金币为例，此钱币为鲜明的金币质地，材质无疑。百余年来，其包浆纯老，在特定光照角度下，已然可见五彩绽放。金色呈熟旧之感，自然天成，老态无掩。其币身，字口清晰，笔划圆凸，圈珠齿颗粒分明排列规则，边齿规范，深浅适度。背蟠龙纹模打较深，龙鳞片甲较为丰满分明，整个云龙纹饰凸起，顶面凸圆，线条清晰。一言以蔽之，此乃机制正模之样作矣。

由于当时清政府条件所限，大多数光绪元宝均由著名的英国伦敦伯明翰造币有限公司的机器所造，可谓中西结合，自然也多了一些西方文化和色彩。但是清政府灭亡后，机器也随之销毁，所以后续无法再造，流通和存世的数量随时间逐年减少，这也造成光绪元宝如今价格高昂的原因之一。
