read between the lines -【Cambridge Dictionary】: to try to understand someone's real feelings or intentions from what they say or write，通過對方所說的或者所寫的，嘗試理解真實的情緒或意圖，簡單的說，就是“聽懂話外音”，“看出字裡行間的意思”，“細品一下”。這個idiom源自於為了隱藏並傳遞信上的秘密信息，人們使用看不見的墨水，這種技巧常出現在軍隊裡。他們先用普通墨水寫出一封正常的信，看起來不會讓人起疑，然後再在行與行之間用特殊的墨水寫上看不見的信，為了看到這個真實的信息，接受者不得不read between the lines!
Joe: "What happened when you asked Laura out on date last week?"
上週你和勞拉的約會怎麼樣了？
Tom: "She said that I'm a really good friend and she wants us to have dinner one day."
她說我是個好人，她想要和我在某一天共進晚餐。
Joe: "Oh, that doesn't sound good."

Tom: "Why not? She wants to go for dinner!"

Joe: "You need to read between the lines ! When a girl says you're a good friend, it means she doesn't like you in any other way."

She said that there was nothing wrong with their relationship but reading between the lines, I think they're going to break up soon.
