四川銅幣軍政府是由四川銅元錢幣演變過來的，最早銅元清光緒二十八年(1902)，川督岑春煊始議鑄造銅元。光緒二十九年(1903)六月，建立四川銅元局，其規模不大，僅就原購鑄小制錢的廢機修整使用．廠房是機器局的壓銅廠和舊的銅錢廠，鑄料是機器局的槍彈廢殼邊渣和寶川局餘銅，圯煉淨盡。按銅96%、鉛0.1%及其他的比例配鑄“當五”、“當十”銅元。所鑄銅元悉用紫銅,量較好。以致四川銅元成為全國銅元特點之一。
