Several years ago, I was in a summer camp in America. At first, I wasn’t dare to speak. But luckily, there was a talent show. So, I got up my courage, took a deep breath, and I started. The music was a hit. Other foreign kids were so interested in the gorgeous Chinese traditional music. I eventually started talking, telling them about this music, about the beautiful love story of liangzhu, about many other beauties in Chinese culture.
That’s how my English story begins. After that, I found my passion to speak. Sharing Chinese culture encourages me to practice my English. Nowadays, we need better understanding between each other around the globe, just like the debate between journalist Liuxin and Trish Regan recently. As a young speaker, I feel desired and even responsible to tell others about our country. That’s what leads me on the way of learning English, from China to the world.
幾年前我在美國夏令營時，非常怕開口說英語。幸運的是，當時有一個風采展示，我鼓起勇氣，深呼吸，拿起自己的樂器，開始演奏。外國朋友對我的中國傳統樂器和音樂非常感興趣，這也激發了我開始用英語對話，開啟了我的英語學習之路。我越來越對英語演講感興趣，分享中國文化也鍛鍊了我的英語能力。現在，國際交流越來越多，作為一名演講者，我感受到了向世界介紹中國的責任，這也將繼續激勵我堅持英語學習。

郜鈺萌在視頻中演奏的歌曲是《梁祝》（The Butterfly Lovers），歌曲源自於中國國家級非物質文化遺產《梁山伯與祝英臺》，中國戲曲一直廣泛演繹著這個美麗的故事，它曾在不同時期被越劇、京劇、川劇、豫劇、黃梅戲、粵劇、歌仔戲等數十個劇種演繹。

1953年，越劇《梁山伯與祝英臺》被拍攝成為新中國首部彩色電影，並跟隨周總理遠赴日內瓦，其“東方的羅密歐與朱麗葉”式的東方詩意和浪漫，曾將世界喜劇大師卓別林深深吸引。
今天一起來走進《梁祝》的世界。
梁祝 The Butterfly Lovers
This beautiful love story occurred in Shangyu, Zhejiang.The young woman Zhu Yingtai disguised herself as a young man to attend a school in Hangzhou.
During her journey to Hangzhou, she met Liang Shanbo, a fellow traveler and a schoolmate. They became good friends and sworn ‘brothers’.
They studied together for the next three years in school, and Zhu gradually fell in love with Liang.
One day, Zhu was summoned home by her father. Liang accompanied her for 18 miles to see her off. She tried several times to hint to him her identity and love for him during the journey, but Liang did not catch any of her hints.
Zhu finally came up with an idea, and told Liang that she would act as a matchmaker between him and her ‘twin sister’ at home. Before they parted, Zhu reminded Liang to visit her residence later so he could propose to marry her ‘sister’.
Months later, when Liang visited Zhu, he discovered that she was actually a woman. The joy of their reunion was short-lived as Zhu’s parents have be trothed her to the frivolous son of the powerful and wealthy Ma family. Liang was heartbroken when he heard the news. His health gradually deteriorated until he became critically ill, and died in grief.
Zhu was stricken with sorrow. She came to Liang’s tomb to mourn, when the whipping winds and thunder storms split the tomb in two where upon Zhu threw herself into it.
While the winds died down, two butterflies were seen flitting away to the heavens.
This timeless story of the eternal love has been chanted ever since by the Chinese people from generation to generation.
