發 行 背 景
1912年4月袁世凱出任大總統。北洋政府鑑於當時鑄幣、紙幣十分複雜，流通的中外貨幣在百種以上，規格不一，流通混亂，折算繁瑣，民眾積怨，同時也想借助貨幣改制以解決軍費問題，便決定鑄發國幣。袁世凱為了提高自己的統治地位，趁機把他的頭像鑄於幣面，“袁大頭”由此而來。

銀 幣 圖 案
“袁大頭”銀幣的正面圖案，中間為袁世凱戎裝左側面像，民國3年版的上方為“中華民國三年”，民國8、9、10年版的為“中華民國*年造”;
“袁大頭”銀幣的背面圖案均是兩株交叉的稻穗，中央為“壹圓”、“中圓”(伍角)、“貳角”、“壹角”字樣，後幾種上方分別有“每二枚當一圓”、“每伍枚當一圓”和“每十枚當一圓”的字樣;
該系列幣分別重26.6克、13.3克、5.3克和2.6克;成色分別為89%、84.5%、80.4%和82.5%;
該幣的外環主要是直齒邊，另外，還鑄有少量工字邊和花齒邊。1914年，正面鐫有袁世凱側面像、背鑄嘉禾圖俗稱“袁大頭”的銀元問世。
