“She had described to him an onslaught of patients who were dying before they could even be taken out of ambulances.”

A top emergency room doctor at a Manhattan hospital that treated many coronavirus patients died by suicide on Sunday. Dr. Breen had contracted the coronavirus but had gone back to work after recuperating for about a week and a half. Dr. Breen, 49, did not have a history of mental illness, her father said.

“Make sure she’s praised as a hero, because she was. She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died.”

Dr. Melniker said the coronavirus had presented unusual mental health challenges for emergency physicians throughout New York, the epicenter of the crisis in the United States.

Doctors are accustomed to responding to all sorts of grisly tragedies, he said. But rarely do they have to worry about getting sick themselves, or about infecting their colleagues, friends and family members.

And rarely do they have to treat their own co-workers.

President Donald Trump often opens his evening news briefings on the pandemic by rattling off a list of actions his administration has taken to secure protective gear for frontline health workers, claiming dire shortages have been resolved. But hospitals, nursing homes and caregivers across the country tell POLITICO they are still struggling to obtain medical masks, gloves and gowns, undercutting Trump’s assertions.

Health care workers in North Carolina on Tuesday held a counter protest against yet another “ReOpen NC” rally in the state capital. These protesters carried signs promoting debunked conspiracy theories about COVID-19.

“My grandma taught me not to argue with a fool because onlookers can’t tell who’s who.”

“We take an oath to ‘do no harm,’ and these protesters are literally causing harm, the people who are trying to reopen our state to infection and death want to know if we are American” she said in the press release.

Audrey Whitlock wrote on the Reopen NC Facebook page to announce Sunday marked her last day of a two-week period in quarantine.

Describing herself as “an asymptomatic COVID19 positive patient,” Whitlock claimed she has been “forced” to self-isolate and, therefore, was “imprisoned in my home.”
