樟林是紅頭船的啟航地，是紅頭船的故鄉，隸屬汕頭市澄海區東里鎮。東里鎮在2011年被廣東省住建部評為“廣東省宜居示範城鎮”同時段樟林鄉也榮獲“廣東省古村落”榮譽稱號。樟林古港在2017年1月入選“廣東十大海上絲綢之路文化地理座標”,同時段樟林古港-新興街被列入省重點建設的八個南粵古驛道之一。
中國海上絲綢之路有三個重要起源地，也是三個地標，它們分別是南宋時期的福建泉州港、元明時的漳州月港，以及清朝中葉的樟林港。
樟林，從一個海角荒埔發展成為負有盛名的港口，經歷了無數風風雨雨，他的成長，正似大海起伏的波濤，成為汕頭作為“海上絲綢之路”起源地之一的重要見證，在“海上絲綢之路”的形成和發展中起過重要作用。清代康、乾年間，樟林是廣東較大港口之一，是潮州紅頭船航泊的基地。由於對外貿易的發展和群眾海外移民的需要，澄海的這一濱海村寨，漸漸發展為一個海運港口。那時它帆檣雲集，貨本成行。樟林作為一個繁盛的港口，歷時長達一個世紀以上，那時，它曾被喻為"通洋總彙之地"、"河海交會之墟"。上世紀初，樟林還被標入了英國出版的世界地圖。
這是2007年左右，央視欄目組《萬里海疆行》在樟林取景拍攝，主要目的是推廣英語，以及宣傳樟林古港，並以中英文雙語介紹，也是為了向外國朋友介紹我們樟林古港的深厚的文化底蘊。
