《雙城記》有其不同於一般歷史小說的地方，它的人物和主要情節都是虛構的。在法國大革命廣闊的真實背景下，作者以虛構人物梅尼特醫生的經歷為主線索，把冤獄、愛情與復仇三個互相獨立而又互相關聯的故事交織在一起，情節錯綜，頭緒紛繁。作者採取倒敘、插敘、伏筆、鋪墊等手法，使小說結構完整嚴密，情節曲折緊張而富有戲劇性，表現了卓越的藝術技巧，風格肅穆、沉鬱，充滿憂憤。
