Tuesday marks the 17th anniversary of 9/11. On September 11, 2001, two hijacked passenger planes were deliberately flown into New York’s World Trade Center. American Airlines flight 77 was flown into the Pentagon building, and United Airlines Flight 93 later crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to take control of the plane from hijackers.
17 years on, survivors, family members and friends of the 2,977 victims will gather at Ground Zero to pray for and remember the victims.
Almost two decades later, the remains of more than 1,100 victims have yet to be identified, with workers in New York City using the latest technology to formally identify them.

With the help of new technology, the remains of 26-year-old financial analyst Scott Michael Johnson were formally identified earlier this year by the medical examiner’s crime lab in New York.
So far, only 1,642 of the 2,753 people who died in the attacks in New York have been formally identified.
Regarded as the best equipped and most advanced lab in North America, the team at the crime lab is still doing all it can to identify the remains, using the latest advances in DNA testing technology.

A memorial ceremony was held last week in New York, when the New York Fire Department added another 18 names of firefighters to a wall of remembrance. They died last year from illnesses caused by the 9/11 attacks.
343 firefighters died and 23 New York Police Department officers were killed on September 11, 2001.
The number killed by related illnesses, including respiratory disease and cancer, is still increasing.

Dan Rowan was off duty as a New York firefighter on that day, but joined the rescue crews on the scene as soon as he heard that the first plane had crashed into the North Tower. Most of his crew did not survive, and 53 of the 343 that passed away were his co-workers, or were trained by him.
Although Rowan is now a police officer in Arizona, media describes how he tries to “live it daily,” and regards the site of the attacks as “Ground Hero” rather than “Ground Zero.”
紐約地鐵重新開放科特蘭街車站
重建的車站定名為世貿科特蘭站（WTC Cortlandt），新建了通風系統和電子標牌。它位於世界貿易中心大樓下方，在“9·11”恐襲中遭到摧毀。

The construction of a 93-feet-tall Tower of Voices was completed last Sunday, at the Flight 93 National Memorial Park in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The concrete-and-steel tower will ring with wind chimes, each of which generates a distinctive sound, according to reports.

The Tribute in Light serves as an annual act of remembrance of 9/11. The two beams of light that point straight up evoke memories of the original Twin Towers.
