After lockdowned in the hometown for 2 months, I finally retured the appartment in the city. Not surprised, all the vegetables bought before has became mummy. I had 5 pots of flowers and washed them very well before I left Xi'an to hometown. I astonished to find 3 flowers withered hardly to the ground but the other 2 had a better shape and still spiked a little, showing signs of vigor. I didn't understand why these two are different from the others with the same quality before and the same pots.
Suddenly I understood it came from the different location I put them. The vivid 2 is located not far from and not near with the main window. So the they can get some moderate sunshine and good ventilation. The other 3 is situated in the small room with not enough wind and sunlight. So they hardly can stand the 2 months' lonely pilgrimage.
In seconds, I thought the gold mean rule in the Confucianism. Gold mean or moderation is one of the core principles of Confucius. Confucianism is a region regarding the "secular as secred", it transcends the dichotomy between religion and humanism, considering the ordinary activities of human life- especially human relationships- as a manifestation of the sacred, because they are the expression of humanity's moral nature (性), which has a transcendent anchorage in Heaven (天). While Heaven (天) has some characteristics that overlap the category of godhead, it is primarily an impersonal absolute principle, like the Dao (道).
So I prefers to call the golden mean as "medility", which is almost the same meaning as humanistic. which is manifested by Confucian ethical codes, characterised by the promotion of virtues Wuchang (五常)，Ren(仁 benevolence humaneness), Yi(义 righteousness or justice), Li(礼 proper rite), Zhi(智 knowledge) and Xin (信 integrity). I think Ren (benevolence) is the medility of ourself heart between cruel altruistic and social fear; Yi(义 righteousness) is the medility of our relation with our friends between glued bound and isolation; Li (礼 proper rite) is the medility of our relation with gods or superiors between prodigal and frugality; Zhi(智 knowledge) is the medility of our mind between fascist and dullness; Xin (信 integrity) is the medility of our faith between cheat and cheated.
Chinese practices medility in every activity of life. Even in the coronavirus epidemic, your keeping distance with others, your sanitation with yourself and your confidence with goverment and yourself are the demostration and exercise of medility.
