Whenever we see a button, we are eager to press it because we know something will happen. This is true in most cases, for example on a doorbell and on the “on/off” button on the TV. But some buttons are actually fake, like the “close” button on a lift.

Many people are in the habit of pressing the “close” button because they don’t have the patience to wait for the lift doors to shut. But lifts’ “close” buttons are a complete scam (騙局), at least in the US --the doors will not close any faster no matter how hard you press.

It started in the 1990s when the Americans with Disabilities Act was passed in the US, making sure that all lifts stayed open long enough so that people with disabilities could enter. Only US firefighters and repairmen can use the buttons to speed up the door-closing process if they have a code or special keys.

But to normal lift riders, the buttons aren’t completely useless. According to psychologists, fake buttons can actually make you feel better by offering you a sense of control.

“Perceived (能夠感知的) control is very important. It reduces stress and increases well-being,” Ellen J. Langer, a psychology professor, said, “ having a lack of control is associated with depression.”

Experts have revealed that a lot of buttons that don’t do anything exist in our lives for this same purpose. For example, many offices in the US have fake thermostats (溫度調節器) because people tend to feel better when they think they can control the temperature in their workspace.

But psychologists found it interesting that even when people are aware of these little “white lies”, they still continue to push fake buttons because as long as the doors eventually close, it is considered to be worth the effort.

“That habit is here to stay,” John Kounios, a psychology professor, said. “Even though I have real doubts about the traffic light buttons, I always press them. After all, I’ve got nothing else to do while waiting. So why not press the button in the hope that this one will work?”

8. What was the author’s main purpose in writing the article?

A. To analyze the functions of fake buttons.

B. To describe some different kinds of fake buttons.

C. To explain the advantages and disadvantages of fake buttons.

D. To explore people’s different habits when it comes to pushing buttons.

9. In America, the “close” buttons on lifts _______.

A. are fake for the convenience of disabled people

B. work only when people press them hard for a while

C. were specially designed to give people a sense of control

D. cannot speed up the process of closing the door in any case

10. The underlined part “for this same purpose” in Paragraph 6 refers to _______.

A. making people more patient B. giving people perceived control

C. helping people to build up confidence D. making people with depression feel better

11. According to John Kounios, people who press fake buttons ______.

A. should give up this habit B. probably do so to kill time

C. consider what they do to be meaningless D. don’t know that what they press is fake

For years I have had no idea what I have been doing with my life. I was a 30-year-old lawyer in New York. But being a lawyer was never my dream or goal in life. I honestly wanted to be a writer. I have a great imagination and would write amazing stories in my head. But I always knew that being a writer was never possible for me because it was a better financial decision to stay a lawyer.

Recently, I couldn’t fall asleep at my usual time of 10 p. m. and when I did fall asleep I had the same dream over and over again. The dream starts with me in the ocean trying to go for a swim and I’m searching for something, but I start to drown and have no control over my body. Then a light shines through the waters and when I look up all I can see is myself in a bright white room writing a novel. Then I hear a voice say repeatedly, “Now is the time to try something new!”

It wasn’t just a dream, it was my opportunity to make something good out of my life. That afternoon, I quit my job at the law firm and I couldn’t have been any happier. My life started at 30, and every day since that point I haven’t stopped enjoying life. I started to write and have been on the best-sellers list for the last two months. Things have definitely turned around.

Change is a good thing; it gives us an opportunity to take a chance. So my two favorite words I live by and so should you are “change and chance”.

12. From the first paragraph, we can know that ________.

A. the author is now 30 years old B. It is impossible for the author to become a writer

14. The underlined part in the 3rd paragraph probably means the author ________.

A. regretted having quit his job as a lawyer

B. was unhappy after giving up his job as a lawyer

C. was upset because he had to give up his job as a lawyer

D. was pretty happy when he quit his job as a lawyer

15. The best title of the text might be _________.

第二節(共5小題: 每小題2分,滿分10分)

根據短文內容,從短文後的七個選項中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項。選項中有兩項為多餘選項。

We’ve all made the excuses. But the successful ones are those who can kill the excuses like they are miserable maggots (蛆蟲). 16

See the positive.

Excuses are usually made because we don’t feel like doing something-----we’re stressing the negative.

17 And maintain a positive attitude, or you’ll never beat the excuses.

Take responsibility.

Excuses are ways to get out of owning up to something. If we don’t have the time, money, equipment, etc., then it’s not our fault, right? Wrong. Take action and own the solution.

18

Just about every problem has a solution. Don’t have time? Start with just 5-10 minutes. Make the time. Wake earlier. Do it during lunch. Don’t have the energy? Do it when you have higher levels of energy. You’re smart. Figure out the solution.

See your goal.

This is your motivation — your reason for doing it. Sure, you could just lay on the couch (長沙發), but if you think about why you really want to pursue a goal, you’ll be motivated. 19

Be responsible.

Have a workout partner, a project partner, a team, someone to report to. If you have to meet a coach or partner, you’re more likely to do something. 20

A. Find a solution.

B. Here’s how to kill them.

C. Watch this and then go and do it.

D. Imagine that goal and just get started.

E. Instead, see the fun in something and the joy in it.

F. Analyze the nature of every problem you meet with.

G. However, those unsuccessful ones don’t know how to handle them.

語法填空(20’)

Why do people laugh?

But first, let's explore why some people laugh.

Wynter Oshiberu teaches English in Washington, D.C. and Maryland, including for the International Center for Language Studies and a nonprofit group 31 (call) Paper Airplanes.

She says most people who laugh are not trying to be mean or 32 (hurt). Instead, a language 33 (learner) pronunciation or way of putting words together may sound unusual to some native speakers and can take them 34 surprise.

"And they're not thinking about how it might make the other individual feel who's learning the language... It's just a natural instinct when you hear something that sounds a little bit different 35 what you would expect to hear or how you would expect to hear it."

If the way you say something sounds different or unusual to a native speaker, that person may not have had much contact with foreigners.

Josh Plotkin is an American 36 (live) in Brazil. He 37 (be) fluent in Portuguese for years. He operates a website called BrazilianGringo.com, which teaches foreigners how to live in Brazil and improve their spoken Portuguese.

On his website, Plotkin notes that some Brazilians who have little contact with foreigners laugh at him because they aren't "used to hearing an American speaking Portuguese."

He notes similar experiences when traveling in other countries and trying 38 (speak) their languages.

But 39 the reason is lack of contact or something else, we have 40 (tip) for overcoming the fear of using your English.

詞彙填空(10’)

The first suggestion is to relax and be patient with yourself, a piece of advice from Oshiberu.

She says to r41 yourself that you are learning the language, so it is n

42 to make mistakes. She advises not to be too hard on yourself.

"I think sometimes the best thing to do is just smile and just breathe and relax and...try not to let the fear of laughter stop you from learning the language."

Oshiberu also suggests learners avoid setting learning goals that are too strict, which can sometimes become a b43 rather than help.

Other experts note that people who make jokes or laugh may not have studied a second language. This is yet another reason not to j44 yourself by the reactions of others.

Plotkin warns against worrying that people are thinking, "You look like a fool trying to speak our language." Ideas like these can hurt your p45 and be a barrier to fluency.

短文改錯(10’)

The four and final tip is to keep a sense of humor.

Keeping a sense of humor can make the long process of learning a language more funny. You might even laugh at the person who is laughing and making the joke. This may feel strange at first but gets easy with time.

Josh Plotkin notes that, over the time, he has come to understand that laughed at when speaking a foreign language is not a bad thing. He has learned not to take it personal. These days, he even laughs along with the people, using them as a way to make new friend.
