说到名字，想必大家都知道它的英文是 name，但跟 name 有关的惯用语，像是 pet name、big name、call someone names...等等，你知道它们的意思吗？

pen name 笔名

pen 是「笔」，所以 pen name 自然就是「笔名」！或者也可以说 pseudonym /ˈsuːdənɪm/ ，同样可以用来表示「笔名」。例如：

Some authors prefer to write under a pen name because anonymity gives them more freedom to voice their opinion.

有些作家喜欢用笔名创作，因为匿名性给了他们更多自由去表达他们的想法。

pet name 亲昵的称呼

大家看到 pet name，可能会联想到「宠物名」，但除此之外，pet 其实也能作为形容词，意思是 expressing fondness or endearment（表示喜爱和爱意），所以 pet name 合在一起，常用来指 a name that a person uses for someone to show love or affection（为了展现对某人的喜欢或爱意而使用的名字），也就是「亲昵的称呼」，像是「小名、爱称、昵称」等。例如：

He felt embarrassed when his mom called him by his pet name in front of his colleagues.

他妈妈在他同事面前叫他的小名时，他感到很难为情。

big name 某个领域中的名人

英文的 big name 指的是「某个领域中的名人（特别是演员、音乐家...等）」。例如：

Even without any big names in the cast, this movie took the box office by storm.

即使卡司阵容中没有任何大牌，这部电影的票房依然大放异彩。

household name 家喻户晓的人

household 是「家庭」的意思，但 household name 并不是「家庭的名字」，而是指「家喻户晓的人」。例如：

That talented young man started off as a background actor and became a household name in just a few years.

那名才华洋溢的年轻人从群众演员做起，短短数年内就成为家喻户晓的人物。

code name 代号名

code name 指的是 A word used for secrecy or convenience instead of the usual name（为了保密或方便不使用真名而使用的字词），也就是我们中文说的「代号、代号名」。例如：

Drug dealers usually use code names when talking about drugs to avoid being noticed.

毒贩在谈论毒品时大多会用代号来避免引起注意。

call someone names 污辱、谩骂某人

name 除了「名字」的意思之外，也能用来表示 a descriptive often disparaging epithet（一种通常带有贬义的描述性称号），那用带有贬义的称号去称呼某人，就是去「污辱、谩骂某人」的意思啰！来看个例子：

Sam wants to change schools because his classmates keep calling him names and giving him a hard time.

Sam 想转学，因为他的同学一直辱骂他、不给他好日子过。

那要注意这个词组中 names 是复数，且 someone 不是所有格；如果是 call someone’s name，意思就是单纯的「叫某人名字」。例如：

Raise your hand when I call your name.

当我叫到你的名字时请举手。

而类似call someone names 的用法还有 name-calling，指的是 the act of using offensive names to insult someone（用冒犯的称呼去污辱人），也就是「辱骂、骂人的行为」。例如：

Hey, kids. Stop it! Name-calling won’t get you anywhere.

嘿，孩子们。都停下！骂来骂去毫无意义。

name-dropping 提及认识的名人，藉此抬高身价

drop 有「丢下、扔下」的意思，这个词字面上看起来像是「丢下名字」，但其实要表达的是 the act of mentioning famous people who you know or claim to know in order to impress other people（提到你认识的名人或声称你认识他们，藉此让他人对他刮目相看），也就是「提及认识的名人，藉此抬高身价」的意思。你可以想象一个人不断丢出名人名字的画面，应该就比较好理解。

另外，这个字的动词是 name-drop，而喜爱做这件事则称作 name-dropper。来看个例子：

I couldn’t help but roll my eyes when I heard him name-dropping again.

他不停炫耀自己认识的名人时，我忍不住翻了白眼。
