“問題就在這裡，牧師，”比爾回答說。“不錯，鍾能報時了，但是，恐怕每到1點鐘，它總要敲13下，對此我已無能為力了。”

（1）定語從句以及省略that的用法

there's nothing I can do about it.

這裡我截取了一小句，這個句子本身主語只是：there's nothing. 就已經是一個完整的句子了，但是後面為什麼又加了一個I can do about it呢？這裡是為了來修飾nothing，說明我什麼都做不了。正常情況下，nothing後應該加一個that來引導定語從句，這裡為了使句子看起來更加簡潔，把that省略掉了，那麼什麼時候才能省略that呢？

①that在定語從句中作賓語或介詞賓語時可省略

He is reading the book (that) he bought yesterday. 他在讀他昨天買的書。

②that作從屬連詞，在句子中沒有實在意義，只起到連接作用，以引導賓語從句時，也可以省略。

We are sure (that) we can have a better and cleaner place in the future.

我們相信，我們可以有一個更加美好，更清潔的地方。

③so that … 結果狀語從句中的省略

The sound is so weak (that) you cannot hear it. 聲音弱得你聽不見。

（2）表示習慣的用法

We'll get used to that. 大家慢慢就會習慣的。

這裡get used to就是變得習慣於。而平時我們表示習慣做某事，用的是be used to doing sth.這裡大家需要區分一下。

（3）as … as的用法

Thirteen is not as good as one. 13下是不如1下好。

as good as 和……一樣好，是形容詞的比較級用法。

I just hope our feelings, can be as good as before. 我只是但願我們的感情，能像以前那麼好。

as near as 差一點

as much as 同量的

as well as 和…一樣
