湖北省造光绪元宝的由来：公元1894年，张之洞将位于武汉三佛阁街的原守备署改建为湖北银元局，并仿造广东省第三版银元的式样铸造湖北省造光绪元宝，初铸版银币背面龙图的左右两边镌刻“本省”二字，以示与外省区别，仅限在湖北本省使用，因为不便于流通而铸额很小。湖北银元局将初铸版银币背面的“本省”二字去掉，于1895年铸行了新版“湖北省造光绪元宝”，投放市场流通后，“本省”银币被回收兑换和销毁。1895年湖北省造光绪元宝银币正面珠圈内镌满汉文“光绪元宝”四字，珠圈外上端镌汉文“湖北省造”四字，下端镌汉文“库平七钱二分”或“库平七分二厘”六个字，左右两侧各镌一个六花星。银币背面中央镌蟠龙图，上端环镌英文“湖北省”，下端环镌英文币值，左右两端稍上侧各镌一个六花星。

目前就有这样一组光绪元宝“湖北省造光绪元宝库平七分二厘和福建官局造光绪元宝库平七分二厘”展现在国内知名艺术网站上—虎拍艺术网。光绪元宝是清朝光绪年间流通的货币之一，由湖北先引进英国铸币机器铸造银元和铜元，之后各省纷纷仿效。这组光绪元宝钱币版式、图案设计大致相同，钱背龙纹设计不同，钱背龙纹铸造栩栩如生各有特色。光绪元宝钱背龙纹图案设计千变万化。
