Every language has idioms and interesting phrases. Their histories can often be very entertaining. Let’s look at a few.

Sell like hotcakes

Hotcake is another word for pancake. They were—and still are –a very popular food item sold at fairs and festivals. The phrase “sell like hotcakes” came to mean anything that sold quickly and well. It became popular back in the mid-1800s.

Hear it through the grapevine

Before the telephone, there was the telegraph. It carried messages across all lands and oceans. The wires hanging from the poles often looked like they were in a tangled mess. People believed that it looked a little like a grapevine. So the phrase came to mean information that is passed from person to person.

Green-eyed monster

William Shakespeare is responsible for this phrase, which is still used today. In his play Othello, he called jealousy the “green-eyed monster.” He is said to have gotten the idea from a cat playing with its next meal before eating it.

Olive branch

Many western idioms come from the Bible, and this one comes from the story of Noah. God planned to flood the earth. He told Noah to load his family and at least two of every animal onto an ark. After 40 days the rain stopped, so Noah sent out a dove to check for dry land. The dove returned with a small branch form an olive tree. The phrase came to mean to offer peace to someone.

Fly off the handle

In the pioneer days in America, people cut wood with axes. They were often handmade and not always of the best design. Sometimes the head of the axe would fly off the handle when someone was chopping wood. People started using this phrase to mean someone suddenly getting very angry.

Talk a blue streak

This describes anyone who speaks rapidly and excitedly. It is said to come from lighting, which strikes quickly and sometimes has a blue color.

B

“Hello?” That common word begins most English-speaking telephone conversations. But it didn’t always. According to history, Thomas Edison started the “hello” convention. He encouraged people to use it when answering the phone. The telephone’s inventor, Alexander Graham Bell thought that “ahoy” was a better telephone greeting. “Ahoy” is also a greeting –a nautical one. People onboard ships call to each other by saying, “Ahoy.” That greeting never caught on, but Bell never joined the “hello” crowd. He continued to use “ahoy” for the rest of his life. So why did “hello” overtake “ahoy” as the phone greeting of choice? It may have had something to do with the first phone book. Back in 1878 when the telephone was new to everyone, phone book came with a “how to” section. They wanted to teach proper telephone etiquette and told users to initiate their phone conversations with “a firm and cheery hello.” Soon, telephone operators were being called “hello girls.” For years these women had the job of connecting people’s phone calls. There were no direct calls.

Americans don’t just use “hello” to answer the phone. They use it multiple times during the day and with different meanings. “Hello” can be used as an exclamation to get someone’s attention (Hello! I am talking to you!). Or to express surprise (Hello! What do you think you’re doing?). “Hello” can also call into question someone’s common sense. For example, “You’re really going to spend 5,000 dollars on a purse? Hello!”

24. What does the word “caught on” mean?

A.Be popular B. Be replaced C. Be ignored D. Be interesting

【答案】A

25. What is right about the first phone book?

A. The phone book came with a “what to” section.

B. The phone book was written by Thomas Edison.

C. The popularity of “Hello” has something to do with the first phone book.

D. The first phone book told users how to interrupt their phone conversations.

Back in 1878 when the telephone was new to everyone, phone book came with a “how to” section. So why did “hello” overtake “ahoy” as the phone greeting of choice? It may have had something to do with the first phone book. They wanted to teach proper telephone etiquette and told users to initiate their phone conversations with “a firm and cheery hello.”

26. Why was “Hello” chosen to initiate the conversations?

A. Because it is firm and cheerful.

B. Because it is easy to remember.

C. Because the phone book told people to say it.

D. Because it is chosen by the telephone inventor.

【答案】A

They wanted to teach proper telephone etiquette and told users to initiate their phone conversations with “a firm and cheery hello.”

27. Which of the following situation can American use “Hello”?

A. To avoid someone’s attention.

B. To express someone’s sadness.

C. To end the phone conversation.

D. To call into question someone’s common sense

【解析】根據文章的最後一段,“Hello” can be used as an exclamation to get someone’s attention可以判斷A是錯誤的,是吸引某人的注意力,而不是避開某人的注意。 Or to express surprise (Hello! What do you think you’re doing?) 根據最後一段原文“Hello” can also call into question someone’s common sense.

About 60 years ago in sunny California, diehard surfers decided to try surfing the streets. By attaching roller-skate wheels to short boards, these “sidewalk surfers” created skateboarding. At first, they skateboarded on sidewalks and streets. Soon, they were looking for more interesting places and found them in swimming pools.

In an effort to save water during a drought in 1976 and 1977, people in Southern California drained the water from their backyard pools. Skateboarders drove through neighborhoods looking for these dry pools. If the owners weren’t home, the skateboarders made themselves at home, skating in strangers’ empty pools for hours on end! This behavior and a general lack of regard for rules and others’ property brought about the skaters’ reputation as rebels.

This same attitude was common among skateboarders in other cities as well. In London, skateboarders found a perfect skateboarding location beneath Queen Elizabeth Hall, which was on the south bank of the Thames River. Underneath this concert hall was an open space called the Undercroft. It had concrete stairs, banks and other features on which skateboarders could practice tricks. For years, the Undercroft was the best-known skateboarding spot in London.

In 2013, plans were made to alter the area around Queen Elizabeth Hall, including the Undercroft. If the plans had gone ahead, the skateboarding area would have been replaced by new retail spaces. Many people protested the changes, believing they would ruin the area. In the end, the plans were cancelled, and the Undercroft was saved.

Currently, there are new plans for the area. This time, however, they aim to improve the skateboarding area by expanding it and adding new lighting.

28. What did the surfers do sixty years ago?

A. They began to make money from their hobby.

B. They created a new form of recreation.

C. They gave free swimming lessons to new surfers.

D. They made better tools for surfing on waves.

【答案】B

There, live music, Aussie-themed food vendors and other activities await. Visitors can also climb this landmark at twilight for a panoramic view of Brisbane and the surrounding area. They may even catch a glimpse of the fireworks. As summer is nearing its end and schools will be starting shortly, everyone is out enjoying themselves.

___36___ Then listen up, because we can help you stop putting things off and start getting things

done….

1. ___37___

Write everything down, and be sure to include when it needs to completed. As you finish each task, put a big check-mark next to it. And make it fun – buy a cute notebook just for your to-do lists, and give yourself a happy face sticker every time you complete a task.

2. Reward yourself.

For those things that just aren’t that exciting to do, reward yourself for getting them done. For smaller jobs, promise yourself one big cup of Coco Cola. ___38___

3. Break it down.

When a project seems overwhelming(過於繁重的),it is so easy to come up with an excuse to procrastinate(拖延). You tell yourself, “Oh, I’m going to have to devote hours to this, and I just can’t deal with that right now!” So set small goals instead. ___39___ And you won’t be stuck staying up late trying to cram everything in the night before the test—so not fun.

3. Face your fears.

Sometimes you might put off doing something that you really want to do ……like taking tennis lessons. If fear is holding you back, just remember that everyone had to start somewhere. You won’t be a beginner forever, and the longer you put it off, the harder it will be. ___40___

A. Get organized--- make a list!

B. So stop delaying, and get moving!

C. Figure out why you’re procrastinating(拖延).
