根據BP（世界能源統計評述）年度報告，展示了1985至2018年發電量排名前20的國家。中國在80年代發電量遠落後於美、俄、日、德等經濟強國，到了95年前後迅速增長飛躍至前3名，截止到2018年底，以71118億千瓦時（佔全球總髮電量的1/4）拉開了與第二名之間的差距。除了在總髮電量上的絕對優勢，我國在清潔能源發電領域也有長足的發展，近些年來興建了諸多核能，風能，水利，太陽能發電基地。由原本的火力發電為主逐步向清潔能源轉變。
