“我想搬去一個地方，

那裡的河流不會散發臭味，

我可以在乾淨的水裡游泳。”

這是孫語梁大二為課程作業拍攝視頻時採訪的一位小女孩說的，這句話深深地印在他腦海裡，甚至影響了他後來的課題和升學選擇。這位來自鄉村的小女孩，那時正目睹家鄉為建造旅遊景點大興土木。

中國的很多湖泊都在遭受人為干擾導致的水汙染。作為環境科學專業的學生，我們會經常去實地考察和測量，每當看到水面上漂浮著厚厚的藻類或死魚、管道里的廢水直接排放到湖裡，我都非常沮喪。

這也是我把水資源作為科研實踐的重心和畢業論文的主題的原因。

不曾想到，自己對環境科學的關注和熱情打動了多所名校，臨近畢業時，孫語梁收到了牛津大學、倫敦大學學院、帝國理工學院、哥倫比亞大學、卡耐基梅隆大學五所世界名校的錄取通知書。

用一篇很“水”的論文打動了名校

為了能在水資源領域進行深入研究，大三暑假，孫語梁成功申請到了哈爾濱工業大學的城市水資源與水環境國家重點實驗室的實驗助理崗位。

“我們通過Landsat衛星圖像、地理空間技術對哈爾濱太平湖的水質進行監測，根據湖中不同地點的不同反射光譜，來判斷該處水質的富營養化情況。”

這項試點研究將大數據等新技術與水利資源工程相結合，讓孫語梁大受啟發，也為他的畢業論文提供了可靠的數據支持和實踐資料。

他在論文中詳細地介紹瞭如何從目標湖的28個不同地點收集樣本、如何識別樣本中的沉積物和硅藻種類、如何在實驗中對猜想進行證實或證偽、最終如何利用湖泊底棲硅藻的生物多樣性來監測湖泊營養級別……

“也許正是這篇詳實的論文，最終打動了名校的專家學者，相信我有足夠的學術能力和科研實踐能力進行下一步的學習吧。”

放棄牛津，主動走出舒適圈，探索更加適合自己的未來

今天正好是孫語梁去哥倫比亞大學報到的日子。

很多人對他的選擇表示不解：大學期間在英諾待了兩年，對英國的環境已經非常適應了，加上手握牛津這樣的頂尖名校offer，一切看起來都那麼完美，為什麼不這樣繼續走下去呢？

這個開朗的男生給出的回答是：

△“我想主動走出自己的舒適區。”

“選擇美國的哥大，是有點大膽、但經過深思熟慮的結果。很多選擇升學的寧諾學生都會選擇英國，因為在課程體系等很多方面，寧諾與英國高校可以無縫銜接，下一階段的學習中，我們能很快進入角色。

但在我看來，美國環境科學領域的技術應用比較成熟，此外我也諮詢了自己非常信賴的老師——曾在美國工作、生活過的地理科學助理教授何根根，他認為美國開放、活潑又不失嚴謹的學術氛圍非常適合我。”

選擇美國，還與孫語梁另外一個研究興趣——頁岩氣技術有關。

“經歷過2008年前後的頁岩氣革命，美國已經成為世界上唯一實現頁岩氣大規模商業性開採的國家，大大降低了對石油的依賴。

中國的頁岩氣儲量與美國相當，但富集區多在地質條件複雜的西南西北地區，埋藏深度也比美國深很多，開採難度很大。入學後，我想尋求學習雙學位的機會，在能源技術，尤其是頁岩氣技術方面進行探究。

希望有一天，我能為中國的頁岩氣技術做些什麼。”

獲得過校長獎學金和年度優秀學生獎學金的孫語梁在學習上很有自己的方法，

“每次考試季我都會進行三輪複習：第一輪將課本和所有資料快速看一遍，把知識點挑出來、抄下來；第二輪複習重點，做以往考試的樣卷和真題；第三輪查漏補缺。

對考題進行預測也是一個很好的方法，把自己能想到的問題都提前準備好，會讓人信心倍增。”

雖然在學習上下了很大功夫，但孫語梁絕不會把所有的課餘時間全部用來學習。由於個子高，他被校模特隊和校電視臺相中。

“為了更好的T臺效果，在學姐學長的指導下努力改正駝背、調整手臂的擺動方式；為了扮演好死侍（漫威漫畫中的角色），克服害羞和怯場、穿著惹眼的戲服在商場裡進行影片拍攝，做著滑稽、誇張的動作……

在寧諾的這些經歷，對我來說都是獨一無二的。

去英諾後，熱愛運動的他通過籃球和健身交到了許多朋友，還被推選為地理系籃球隊隊長。

站在新旅程的出發點回首大學四年，孫語梁覺得自己在寧諾完成了蛻變，“很多同學像我一樣，通過這四年完成了彎道超車。

最後，我想跟學弟學妹分享的是，珍惜和利用好寧諾給你的自由，沒有人拿著教鞭時刻在你身旁，你要自己管好自己；但也正是這樣，你才能成為自己想要成為的模樣。”

For a better environment: UNNC student determined to start from himself

“I would love to move to somewhere that is not stinky and has a river where I can swim, just like before,” a little girl, who had suffered from the construction for tourism in her hometown, told Yuliang during his course project interview two years ago. That impressed him and inspired him to concentrate in the field of water resources.

“It was quite depressing to see a thick layer of algae and dead fish floating on the top of a lake as well as the wastewater directly discharged to it; there is also a large number of lakes suffering from anthropogenic disturbances throughout China. I strongly feel the responsibility to take care of it,” said Yuliang.

Yuliang’s passion and efforts in natural sciences won him offers to study at top universities around the world including Oxford University, Imperial College and Columbia University.

In order to investigate water resources thoroughly, Yuliang did an internship at the State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource and Environment of Harbin Institute of Technology. “We adopted Landsat imagery and geospatial techniques to monitor the quality of water resources in Harbin, China, according to their different reflectance spectra,” said Yuliang. The research incorporating new technologies provided Yuliang a great enlightenment as well as substantial data support and practical methodologies for his dissertation. “Maybe it is this detailed paper that persuaded the scholars that I have sufficient academic and scientific research experience to further my study.”

Having studied in UK for two years, Yuliang is perfectly used to the British education system, but Yuliang chose to start his new journey at Columbia University in the US. “Wanting to step out of the comfort zone”, Yuliang described his choice as “a determination under serious consideration and preparation”. “The mature application of the natural science technologies in the US is more attractive to me. My instructor at UNNC Dr. He, who had lived and worked in the US, gave me solid advice as well,” said Yuliang.

As a winner of the President’s Scholarship and the Best Student of the Year Scholarship from the University of Nottingham, Yuliang shared his tips for study – “predicting and preparing for possible exam questions increase confidence greatly”.

Besides, Yuliang also spent a great amount of time on extracurricular activities as a member of UNNC model team, captain of basketball team of School of Geography and producer of Nottingham University Television Station. “Everything here has been unique – overcoming timidity and stage fright, knowing people by playing basketball together, and making funny gestures in costumes at shopping malls,” Yuliang smiled while recalling his experience at UNNC.

“One last thing I want to share with freshers is to value and enjoy the freedom of UNNC. Nobody here would be pushing and telling what you should do but yourself. But that’s how you can become who you want to be.”
