在外国人的日常生活中，
时常可以听到“sweet water”这个短语。
你知道它的意思吗？
“糖水或甜水”？
那可就错了哦！
“sweet”除了我们所熟知的“甜的”的意思外，
还有这么几个常用的含义：
1. 淡的，不咸的；新鲜的（fresh)
2. 悦目的，令人愉快的，惬意的
因此：
sweet water 甜水 / 糖水 （×）
sweet water 淡水 （√）
fresh water 淡水 （√）
sweet water其实是淡水，甘泉的意思
就是大自然的冰川，河流，湖泊里的水
这个词在一些国外地理杂志或节目里经常出现，
后来查字典才知道，原来是淡水啊！

sweet talk
sweet talk 意思是 甜言蜜语
不过宝宝们可要注意啦！
甜言蜜语大多有毒，
真正爱你的人都在细节里。

Sweet talk, is ready for the left ear.
甜言蜜语说给左耳听。（暴露年龄了...哈哈哈）

sweet nothings
sweet nothings 是指 空泛的恭维话，情话
举个栗子：
If you want to know whether your relation

如果你想知道自己和另一半的关系能否持久，那些“甜蜜的废话”就不用听了，倒是不妨去听听另一半的“闲言碎语”。

直译：有一颗甜牙
实际意思：爱吃甜食

She had a toothache recently
because she always has a sweet tooth.

resist eating chocolate and ice cream.

to be in hot water
从字面意思来看，
确实是“在热水中”，
但它的意思其实是说：
“某人遇到非常麻烦的问题”，
相当于be in trouble。
在十六世纪初，
每当有小偷、强盗闯入时，
人们就会从窗户往他们身上泼热水，
后来就常用 hot water 这个词，
来形容有人有麻烦啦~
举个栗子：
A boy can be in hot water with his mother, if he comes into the house with dirty, wet shoes.
一个男孩子如果穿着脏兮兮、湿漉漉的鞋子进家门，会给妈妈惹来很多麻烦。
I was in a bit of hot water with Sarah last night when she found out I went to the movies instead of cleaning the house.
Sarah发现了我昨天晚上去看电影了，而没有打扫卫生，我惹上麻烦了。
You are going to be in hot water if the boss finds out you left early yesterday!

above water
与“be in hot water”意思相反，
这个短语和“keep one's head above water”
意思是一样的，
都有“摆脱困境”、“摆脱麻烦”的意思。
我们都知道，
游泳时要把头抬出水面，
溺水或在游泳时遇到麻烦时，
也要尽量把头部露出水面来呼吸或者呼救，
所以这个短语便有了“摆脱麻烦”的意思。
举个栗子：
Mr. Smith has had a treat deal of extra work recently, but he just manages to keep his head above water.
史密斯先生最近手头有大量的份外工作，但是他还是设法对付过去了。

这次词组的意思和它的表面释义是一样的，
就是我们俗话中的“泼冷水”。

它起源于19世纪的海军，
最初的意思是，将敌方的军舰打成碎片。

The virus blew my computer's hard drive completely out of the water.

make one's mouth water
它的意思是：使...流口水
也就是使人垂涎欲滴

The pies in the store window made little Toby's mouth water.

这句话不是“水从桥下流过”的意思。
It's water under the bridge的意思是：
这已经过去了、已经无关紧要了！

-No, that was a long time ago. It's all water under the bridge.
-没有啦，那都是很久以前的事情了。无关紧要了。
hold water
这个短语单从字面意思上看是拿着水的。
但其实它是指：
某一个人找的借口、提出的理由、或说的话
是站得住脚的，合乎逻辑的。
举个栗子：
That excuse simply doesn't hold water.
Your views are absurd and don't hold water.
His argument just doesn't hold water. It's all based on emotions, not on facts.
他的争论根本站不住脚。都是自己的主观情绪，不是客观事实。
like a duck to water
鸭子喜欢水是天经地义的，
like a duck to water表达的就是：
“非常喜欢”、“如鱼得水”或“轻而易举”。
举个栗子：
She's taken to teaching like a duck to water.
她教起书来轻而易举。
He will take to it like a duck to water.
他在这里会如鱼得水。
