Gerry想约Anna周末出去逛街，Anna回答说：“I really want to, but I can't. I'm broke.”
Gerry感动很疑惑，“ I'm broke ”是什么意思？她坏掉了？难道是生病了吗？
其实，在口语中broke当形容词的意思是破产，之后被大家用来延伸没有钱的意思。
所以“ I'm broke ”不是“我坏掉了”，而是“我没钱了”。
【例句】
A: Hey Anna, do you want to go to the movie with us tonight?
B: I really want to, but I can't. I'm broke.
A: Anna，你今天晚上要不要和我们一起去看电影？
B:我真的很想，但我没钱了。
“没钱”用英语还可以怎么说？
除了I have no money这种基本表达外，我们也可以用更生动的俚语（slang） 来表达“我没钱”：
1.tighten one's belt 勒紧裤带
这个用法相当好记，和汉语里一样，把皮带束紧、约束自己不能乱花钱的过生活。
【例句】：
The young couple have to tighten their belt to make ends meet.
那对年轻的情侣必须勒紧裤带过生活，才能收支平衡。
2.commit wallet homicide 荷包大出血
汉语里也有这种表达，荷包大出血了。
【例句】：
He committed wallet homicide for his girlfriend to celebrate their first anniversary.
他为了女友荷包大失血，来庆祝他们的第一个纪念日。

3.as poor as a church mouse 一贫如洗、穷到吃土
和只能寄居在教堂的老鼠一样穷。这个俚语是有典故的，因为中世纪的西方教堂里是没有放食物的柜子和储物室的，所以住在那里的老鼠总是挨饿。于是，老鼠就成了“贫穷”的象征。
【例句】：
He used to be as poor as a church mouse before his success in stock markets.
在股票投资成功以前，他曾过着一贫如洗的生活。
4.go bankrupt 破产
【例句】：
He became depressed after he went bankrupt.
他破产后陷入忧郁。
5.in the red / in the hole 负债、欠款
财务出现危机，我们会含蓄的说赤字，在英文里也是相同的用in the red，或是in the hole 表示深陷财务危机的之意。
【例句】：
My brother has a lot of credit card debts. He has about 1 million in the hole now.
我弟弟欠了很多卡债，他现在大概还欠一百万元。
