University applications from young men have hit their lowest figures for three years, as part of wider trend among school leavers to shun degrees.

The number of young people looking to take up a degree is 'in the order of 2.5 per cent or lower', than last year, according to Clare Marchant, head of Ucas, the universities admissions service.

Meanwhile, overall applications to UK universities are down by 3.4 per cent on last year.

The widening of the gender gap and the general slump in applications can partly be explained by a demographic dip in the number of 18-year-olds, as well as more people questioning the affordability of a degree course.

On average, degrees in the UK cost £9,250 a year.

There have also been fewer applications from mature and part-time students.

Speaking to The Sunday Times, Marchant said 'university is not for everybody' and called on parents to discuss alternatives, such as apprenticeships.

She also advised young people against 'following their passions' without considering their long-term goals.

'If I had followed my passions at the age of 18 I would have done a running degree,' Marchant said.

Earlier this week, the new Education Secretary, Damian Hinds, also argued that not all students are suited to university and that many could benefit from the Government’s new technical qualifications — known as ‘T-levels’ — which are being set up as an alternative to A-levels.

Mr Hinds said: ‘We need to consider whether in all cases a traditional degree at university is the right option, including those from more affluent backgrounds.’

Meanwhile, the number of foreign students applying to British universities has hit a record high, despite warnings about the impact of Brexit.

Official figures released in June show 125,510 European Union and overseas candidates have applied to take up degree places this autumn, a rise of 2 per cent from last year.

This has been boosted by a record 75,380 students applying from outside the European bloc – an increase of 6 per cent on last year.

This is the highest figure since Ucas records began in 2009.
