此刻，有些人已經拿出了取暖法寶：男/女朋友。
單身的你，只能默默地套上秋褲。
有一種愛叫望穿秋水，有一種冷叫忘穿秋褲。秋褲，這麼重要的禦寒神器，你還不知道它的英文怎麼說嗎？
肯定有人搶答：秋褲是 chill cool，毛褲是 more cool，棉毛褲是 me more cool。

敲黑板！秋褲的英文說法是 long underwear 也可以叫做 long johns。
為什麼這個俚語裡有一個人名 John 呢？
這又牽扯出了一段體育和時尚界的往事。
英國詞源學家 Michael Quinion 認為，秋褲（long johns）與一名叫做約翰·L·沙利文（John L. Sullivan）的人密切相關。沙利文是當時著名的拳擊運動員。
沙利文有一個標誌性的特點是，每場比賽上身赤裸，下身只穿一件時尚單品——秋褲，像這樣↓

後來，這種新奇的穿搭被大眾追捧，這位時尚弄潮兒引領了18世紀的潮流。人們紛紛效仿沙利文，秋褲風靡一時。
Long johns were first introduced into England in the 17th century, but they did not become popular as sleepwear until the 18th century. They were supposedly called long johns after a famous fighter called John L. Sullivan who fought in long underwear.
秋褲於17世紀引入英國，但在18世紀之前並沒有流行。一位名叫
約翰·L·沙利文的拳擊手穿秋褲比賽，後來就把這種褲子以他的名字命名了。
知道了吧，秋褲也曾是人人追捧的時尚潮品，以後請叫它的英文名 long johns。
其實，John 這個英文名在俚語中還是很常見，除了秋褲 long johns 還有 Dear John Letter，中文可翻譯成“分手信、絕交信”。
A Dear John letter is a letter written to a man by his wife or romantic partner to inform him their relationship is over because she has found another lover. The man is often a soldier stationed overseas, although the letter may be used in other ways, including being left for him to discover when he returns from work to an emptied house.
分手信（Dear John letter）是妻子寫給丈夫或情侶一方寫給另一方的信，用來告知他們的關係從此結束，男方一般是駐紮海外的士兵。這種信還可以表達其他含義，比如妻子留給丈夫，當他下班回到家時發現已經人去樓空了。
為什麼，女人給男人寫分手信都要以“Dear John”開頭？John 到底做錯了什麼？
追溯這個詞的起源，要回到二戰期間。
那時，美國捲入戰爭，許多年輕人奔赴戰場，而當時“John”這個名字是美國男孩使用頻率最高的名字。這麼多 John 奔赴海外作戰，一去就是幾個月甚至幾年，有些士兵常年不在家，有些戰死沙場了無音訊。
留在家鄉的妻子或女友等不到愛人的回來，就和其他人跑了。
當然，在分手之前還要通知一下對方，如此就有了大量以“Dear John”開頭的分手信湧入軍隊。

Dear John Letter 一般是女方寫給男方的分手信。
男方寫給女方的分手信可以用 Dear Jane Letter 。
Dear John Letter 這個詞組隨著時代的發展，到今天也有了新的含義：
This term is also used to describe letters written in the context of employment, either to inform an applicant that they had not been selected for a job, why employees had been separated from work, or from an employee to their employer upon the employee quitting.
這個術語也可以在職場上使用，用來通知應聘者落選；僱員被辭退的原因或僱員寫給僱主表示離職。
你一定發現了，John 就跟中文名字“小明”一樣常用，在美國使用頻率很高，有太多人叫 John 了，這導致一些被警察抓住的嫖客都會謊稱自己叫 John。似乎 John 可以指代任何人，所以有一個表達是 John Q. Public 表示“普通人”。
英國愛德華三世期間，法律上還使用 John Doe 來指“訴訟程序中不知真實姓名的當事人”，也就是原告。
The Oxford English Dictionary states that John Doe is "the name given to the fictitious lessee of the plaintiff, the fictitious defendant being called Richard Roe".
《牛津英文詞典》中闡述，John Doe 代表假設的原告，Richard Roe 代表假設的被告。
現今，John Doe 多指“不知姓名的人”，比較像漢語裡常說的“張三、李四”。
