在英語中，有時間兩個詞組即使只相差了一個介詞的不同，它們的含義便會發生很大的差別，join和join in就是其中的典型代表。它們的用法非常相近，但它們的區別也是顯而易見的。
join常常用來表示參加某個組織、黨派或團體併成為其中的一員，包含黨派、軍隊、俱樂部等。
•When did you join the Labour Party?
你何時加入工黨的？
•I decided to join the army.
我決定去參軍。
•You can enjoy a sport without joining a club or belonging to a team.
不加盟俱樂部或球隊也可以享受體育運動的樂趣。
join in表示"參加某項活動或運動"(尤其是正在進行的活動或運動)，如參加討論、遊戲、罷工、遊行等。例：
•In the evening there was a barbecue, with the whole village joining in the fun.
晚上有燒烤活動，全村人歡聚一堂。
• I hope everyone will join in the fun.
我希望每個人都能參與這個娛樂活動。
• Soon the whole crowd joined in to sing the song.
很快整個人群都加入進來唱這支歌。
All of us will join in the celebration of China's 60th birthday.我們都將參加祖國60週年慶典活動。
總之一句話，join常常用於正式的組織，如黨派，軍隊等；而join in擁有暫時的團體，如活動，集會等。
