一、afford的基本用法：
afford 是英語高考常考疑難詞彙。其基本含義有“負擔的起（……費用、損失、後果等）；抽出（時間）；提供 ”。常與can, could , be able to 等情態動詞連用於疑問句和否定句中。用於否定句時，意思是“經不起（發生某事或做某事）”，含盡力避免發生或避免做之意。如：We couldn’t afford a television in those days. 那時，我們買不起電視。There’s a lot to do, we can’t afford to waste any time. 有許多事要辦，我們一點時間都不能浪費。They did not consider whether they could afford the time or not. 他們沒有考慮是否抽得出時間。We can't afford to pay such a price. 我們付不起這個價錢。Dancing affords us pleasure. 跳舞給我們帶來快樂。 afford的形容詞是affordable(支付得起的);第三人稱單數是affords;過去式, 過去分詞是afforded；現在分詞是affording。
