Coronavirus Pandemic: Farm stays in Sichuan find ways to diversify

China's rural revitalization strategy has seen scores of farm stays emerge -- those are places where urban dwellers can get a taste of life on the farm. But even as the coronavirus risk in some of these areas is deemed low, farm stays are not spared as they've seen a decline in customers as they reopen. CGTN reporter Wei Lynn Tang has more from Enyang District in Bazhong City, Sichuan province.

45-year old Gu Wenli normally doesn't have to cook for his customers personally. But these days, he plays both boss and chef at his farm stay. His 11-year old son helps out when he can. Gu's wife left him years ago. He sees just a table or two of customers a day now, since resuming business on March 10th. A far cry from over 10 tables even on a bad day.

GU WENLI Farm stay owner/operator, Wanshou Village Bazhong City, Sichuan Province "Before the pandemic, we made about 1-thousand US dollars a day during our peak season of January to May. But it's been a month since I reopened the shop. And I have only earned 1-thousand-500 dollars during this entire period. I am "in the red" as they say."

And this is all aside from having to pay rent. Gu's home, which he turned into a farm stay, was provided by the government years ago. But food products and staff expenses, plus a severe lack of customers, have placed great pressure on his business. This has pushed Gu to make changes, and diversify his income stream.

I'll take less profit margin to attract more customers. And should things get worse, I plan to expand my farming income. I plan to raise more chickens and grow more vegetables, such that I can also sell to others while at the same time supply them for my own farm stay's use. And above all, I want to learn to promote my farming goods using social media. I've seen how whole chickens can be sold at good prices via short video platforms!"

WEI LYNN TANG Bazhong City, Sichuan Province "Some experts have warned of the possibility of excessive development and supply of farmstays across China. And the COVID-19 pandemic has merely deepened some of the fundamental problems of these farm stays. That said, measures are in place to ensure they operate more sustainably and viably going forward."

XIAO MEI Party Secretary Sankesong Agricultural Sci & Tech Co. "We have been training these farm stay owners in their concepts, and will bring them to visit and learn from other more advanced places such that they can improve their services. Right now, there may be too many restaurants in our scenic spots. But we are still lacking accommodation. We plan to mobilize other homes to tackle this."

People in Wanshou village were lifted out of poverty in 2016. And local officials say the COVID-19 pandemic will not pose the risk of villagers falling back into poverty.

LI YONG Mayor Xiabamiao Town, Sichuan Province "We plan to develop more farm house entertainment avenues, and carry out theme-based activities, such that we can attract more tourists and increase incomes for our villagers. Our per capita income last year had in fact far exceeded our poverty alleviation benchmark."

As for Gu Wenli, he says he is not worried about becoming poor again.

Before operating my farm stay, I never thought of what would happen to my money after using it. But now, I think of investing, of other ways to earn money and to provide for my family. I can't live like I used to, where I am complacent being poor. I actually now think of how to develop myself better, how to better enhance my life."

在新冠肺炎疫情形势下:四川的农家乐在寻找方法扩营增收。

随着农家乐的出现,中国的乡村振兴战略卓有成效。那些在都市生活的人们可以亲身体验农村(农场)的生活。一些地区的疫情已经有所缓和,重新开张的农家乐也还是不能幸免——顾客量大大减少。中国国际电视台记者谭惠莲在四川省巴中市恩阳区带来更多报道。

今年45岁的顾文礼平常都不用亲自为顾客下厨,但是最近,在自家的农家乐,他同时扮演着老板和厨师的角色。他11岁的儿子有时也帮忙打下手,顾文礼的妻子在几年前与他分开。自从3月10日恢复营业以来,现阶段每天只有一到两桌客人,与以前最坏的情况都有10多桌客人对比,差距很大。

万寿村顾氏农家院的老板顾文礼说道:“在疫情发生以前,1至5月的旺季期间我们一天差不多可以挣一千美元,但是现在恢复营业一个多月来,我总共只挣了1500美元。像他们说的那样,我是处于亏损的状态。”

并且这种情况还没有算上房租,顾文礼开的农家乐是用他家的房子改造成的,几年前由政府出资修建。但是,食材、员工工资等开支,加上游客的稀少,给他的生意带来很大的压力,这些都促使着顾文礼做出改变来增加收入来源。

顾文礼说道:“我现在的菜都降价了,比如之前一盘肉丝的价格是28元,现在只卖22元了,我收取很少的利润来吸引更多的顾客。如果情况变得更糟糕,我打算多养一些鸡和种更多的蔬菜来增加我的农业收入,这样在供应农家乐的同时还可以对外销售。并且,我想学习怎样通过社交媒体来销售我家的农产品,我也看到过有些人通过短视频平台以很不错的价格销售很多鸡。”

谭惠莲说道:“一些专家警告说,中国各地可能会出现过度开发(旅游资源)和发展农家乐的情况,新冠肺炎疫情的爆发只是加剧了这些农家乐存在的一些根本问题,也就是说,采取相应措施是为了确保农家乐正常且持续的发展。

三棵松农业科技有限公司的党支部书记肖梅说道:“我们通过对农家乐经营者开展一些培训,来转变他们的经营理念,还带他们去其他更好更先进的地方参观和学习经验,以此来提高他们农家乐的服务水平。现在,我们景区有很多农家乐了,但是我们这仍然很缺乏住宿,我们打算动员其他的老百姓来开农家乐,解决缺少住宿这个问题。”

万寿村于2016年退出贫困村序列,当地的政府官员也说道,(将采取措施确保)这次的新冠肺炎疫情不会使贫困户返贫。

巴中市恩阳区下八庙镇的镇长李勇说道:“我们计划发展更多的农家乐和餐饮游乐场所,完善好相应的游乐设施,这样我们就可以吸引更多的游客,以此来增加村民们的收入。事实上,万寿村去年的人均收入也远超过国家贫困基准(老百姓生活得越来越好了)”

对于顾文礼,他说他并不担心再变穷。

他说道:“这几年,我已经改变了之前的想法,在开农家乐之前,我从来没有考虑过把钱花了以后怎么办。但是现在,我会想到投资,通过其他方式来赚钱养家糊口。我不能像我过去那样生活了,那个时候我还为作为贫困户而‘沾沾自喜’。现在,我内心想的就是怎么样使我自己发展得更好、怎么样来提高我的生活(质量)。”

作为村里曾经的贫困户,顾文礼已经走了一大步了……
