US STAFFING REVENUE PROJECTED AT $119.4 BILLION, DOUBLE-DIGIT DECLINES THIS YEAR: SIA FORECAST
(Apr.9, 2019, /staffingindustry.com/)Total staffing industry revenue this year is projected to be $119.4 billion, down from projected 2019 revenue of $151.8 billion. This is according to the “US Staffing Industry Forecast: April 2020 update” report released today by SIA.
However, that is the “base” case, assuming the Covid-19 lockdowns in many areas of the US remains in place through June and the economy gradually recovers in the second half of the year.
Double-digit revenue declines are expected across most segments of the US staffing industry this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Overall, US staffing revenue is forecast to fall 21% this year, reflecting a 17% drop in temporary staffing revenue and a 43% drop in place and search revenue.
The report also looks at two alternative scenarios - shorter-term lockdowns as well as a longer-term one. In the shorter scenario - with lockdowns lifted in May and the economy recovering fairly rapidly - US staffing revenue is expected to fall only 10%. On the other hand, if lockdowns were to continue through significant stretches of 2020, US staffing revenue is forecast to fall 45%.
Looking at the base scenario, industrial staffing revenue is forecast to fall 25%. IT staffing is expected to fall 14%.
The only segments of staffing projected to show growth during 2020 are in healthcare. Travel nurse revenue is expected to grow 5%, per diem to grow 4% and locum tenens to grow 5%. But revenue in these segments is forecast to decline in 2021.
