‘给面子’可不是‘give face’

lose face： 丢脸

lose face可以表示‘丢脸’， 可是外国人能明白意思，但并不地道。

当他们觉得丢脸时会这样说：

• feel so embarrassed: 尴尬的
• feel so awkward: 尴尬的
• feel so silly: 很愚蠢
• feel disgraceful: 不光彩的

比如， 在很多人，而且还有你喜欢的人面前仰天大摔一跤，

你觉得很“丢脸”可以说：

-I felt so embarrassed when I slipped and fell in the mall in front of Sam.

在商场里就在山姆前面我摔了一跤，好尴尬啊。

02#给面子≠give face

give face是非常中式的表达， 外国人根本听不懂意思。而且"给面子"也是很中式的概念， 在英文中没有完全对应的表达， 可以用意思相近的表达。

大家先试着翻译一句话：

妻子在外面一定给足丈夫面子。

跟“给面子”意思相近的表达：

• respect: v. 尊重
• show respect: 给与尊重
• honor: v. 尊重
• give complimment： 夸奖
• flatter：v. 奉承

所以，上面这句话可以说成：

-A wife needs to respect/show respect to/honor/flatter/give compliments to her husband in front of other people.

问一问？

“他当众批评我，一点也不给我面子”

03#挽回面子

"挽回面子“可以用“save face”， 但其实跟lose face一样，不那么地道。 还有比save face更贴切的表达：

redeem: 赎回， 挽回

redeem yourself: 挽回自己

Trying it again is the only way to redeem yourself.

重新来过是挽回你自己的唯一方式。

04#死要面子活受罪

在英语中没有与“死要面子活受罪”的直译， 但是有意义相近的表达：

• more nice than wise

There's no need to be more nice than wise.

没必要死要面子活受罪啊。
