雅尼是當今世界著名的新世紀音樂作曲家和演奏家；但在他的自傳《傾聽雅尼》（YANNI IN WORDS）裡，他更傾向於稱自己的音樂為現代器樂（Contemporary Instrumental）。
雅尼1954年出生於希臘卡拉馬塔（Kalamata），後加入美國國籍。1972年，畢業於美國明尼蘇達大學。出於對音樂的熱愛，畢業後走上音樂之路。1980年，錄製了第一張專輯Optimystique，至今已發行出版十餘張專輯，兩度被格萊美獎提名，其作品在過去十年中一直是奧林匹克運動會廣播音樂的最愛。曾在希臘雅典帕特農神廟，印度泰姬陵，中國紫禁城，英國倫敦阿爾伯特大廳，美國拉斯維加斯及波多黎各的莫洛城堡舉辦過音樂會。
雅尼代表作之一的《夜鶯》已被選入九年級人教版音樂教材。
