Meghan Marie Phelps, Credits Chinese, BFSU (2012)Answered Jun 17, 2018There are 400 million Chinese studying English and China has more English learners than the U.S. has English speakers. Ok, that should settle it, the global language de facto will never be Chinese. But wait a second. The reason there are so many English speakers globally is that colonizers spread English far and wide. As innovation continues to spread as well, so to does the influence of the strongest market and the biggest presence. The dichotomy is changing, however. No one will argue that business is booming in China and the purchasing power of their citizens is massive. Globalization is dictating that companies are beginning to desperately search for ways to break into the market there. What does that mean? More businesses hiring practices are turning to bilingual employees to fill tech, science, marketing, advertising, and real estate positions. Take Mark Zuckerberg for example, he’s perfectly poised to enter China’s market and work on collaborative projects. That point is purely speculation but let’s continue in the vein of business sense. For example, doing business with a Chinese partner will put you at a strong disadvantage if you cannot speak Chinese regardless if your partner speaks English. Let''s say you hear what your partner wants to disclose in a meeting, yet the finer details between Chinese speaking colleagues (that your partner does not necessarily want you to access) will be discussed without you will leave you without a clue as to the proceedings. It’s only benefits everyone if more people learn a second language. And increasingly, it’s been Chinese. As employers demand Chinese speaking employees the education system has taken note. While Chinese parents send their children to US schools, Americans are increasingly sending their children to immersion programs in Chinese Universities, online courses, and satellite schools. More and more US schools are offering Chinese as a second language option. Chinese universities are experiencing an influx of enrollments of Russian, Korean, Italian, Indian and other foreign students as well. The biggest trend is at home learning from online teachers. Chinese has become more influential as it becomes the language for business in East Asia. While Chinese might be difficult for native English speakers, it’s easier for Japanese and Korean speakers since their language has roots in Chinese already. One argument is that the Chinese language isn’t as wide-spread globally as English. Sure, the language isn’t being spoken in households but travel to any tourist destination and what population of tourists are there more of? Go to Thailand, Korea, or a number of Asian tourist destinations, and the shop staff, servers, and vendors have learned to speak Chinese to appeal to the customers.Another undeniable facet that could challenge how Chinese spreads is real estate. Chinese are purchasing real estate and acquiring foreign companies lately and it’s been insatiable. China has purchased the worlds largest pig and pork producer from the US as well as other farmland and businesses. They have purchased and have been developing an astounding portion of the African continent. They are building infrastructure, settling, and investing to start up businesses there. Now students from various African countries are making the shift from English to Chinese in their schools, while Chinese are not adopting any African languages. The world of business changes rapidly and unmercifully. Capitalism and globalization trends have the only say for the future of language prence. With that being said, it’s undeniable that Chinese has the potential to rival English in popularity and become a force in business and global trade but replacing its pervasiveness is unlikely. But it’s not a bad idea to log in online and study a couple times a week nonetheless.Meghan Marie Phelps,

Terrence Reed, I have been a Hong Kong resident for six years and lived in Guangzhou in 1998-1999.English has been the language of power for a long time, so it is hard to think of a world where English in not the dominant language. The power of English is economic, first with the English speaking British Empire leading up to the second world war, and the American Empire since the end of the second world war.As the power and influence of The USA declines relative to the growth of China, Russia, India and Brasil (the BRICs), the dominance of English as the language of power will also see a decline. This is especially true as the Internet provides increasing levels of accuracy in translation between languages with no extra cost. More an more people are able to use technology in their local language, so the necessity of learning English is decreasing. The same can be said for Japan. There are still a lot of Japanophiles out there, but the necessity of learning Japanese to appreciate Japanese culture is evaporating as translations are ubiquitous in English, Chinese, French, German, etc. It is increasingly easy and practical for people to rely on their mother tongue instead of having to add English, Japanese, Chinese, etc.As the growth of China''s economy continues to outstrip that of the USA, it will soon, and in some ways already has, exceed that of the USA. There is increasing demand for Chinese (Putonghua/Mandarin) to be taught in schools around the world as the result. It used to be the case that local Chinese in Hong Kong only wanted to learn English, but increasingly Putonghua is becoming essential not only for success in the workplace, but for daily life. This is true in most of the cities in China, Putonghua is pushing out local languages.

Gabriel Chan, quintilingual part-time polyglotChinese is a language family where the written form is mutually intelligible between its members but spoken form is not. As far as I know, there is no other language system like this in the world, where people can understand if they write but not when they speak.Mandarin (Putonghua) will be the dominant spoken form and the primary influence on lexicon and culture. However I think it is a sad development because each regional spoken Chinese is rich in its own lexicon and culture. These will gradually be lost after a few more generations unless the government takes measures to preserve these heritages. The exception would be Cantonese, Teochew, Hokkien which have huge overseas diaspora, but especially Cantonese, which enjoy a high social and cultural status in Macau and Hong Kong.In the distant future, if East Asia becomes a peaceful economic power block, a modern auxiliary East Asian language (à la Esperanto) may emerge as a new lingua franca for the region.Gabriel Chan,

Bella Johnson, studied Chinese at University of ArizonaAnswered Apr 19, 2018The Chinese language will continue to gain influence and learners abroad. One of the reasons that the Chinese language may challenge English in the future, is the ability of the Chinese to create useful and convenient apps and websites for daily use. While apps such as WhatsApp, Uber and Facebook all were created in the United States, Chinese entrepreneurs have created their own versions for use in China. Foreigners that try these Chinese versions are very impressed by their features and ease of use. Currently, many popular apps in China, such as the most widely-used car and ride-sharing app in the world, “滴滴出行 (Dīdī chūxíng) Didi Chuxing”.These Chinese apps are gaining traction around the world and may one day, not any time soon, but maybe one day give English-based apps some serious competition. I believe this will give Mandarin Chinese more momentum. In addition to technology, worldwide economic momentum is being led by East Asia. The economy of East Asia is booming and will most likely continue to do so in the coming decades. While Japan and South Korea maintain thriving economies, it is China that has added the most growth and international trade. It is probably the most interesting language to be following (and learning) for today and the future. Stay tuned!Bella Johnson,

Gabriel Flores, M.s. from Guangdong University of Foreign StudiesAnswered May 3, 2018If China continues growing it will become an international language (IL), but, because of difficulty, English and even Spanish will always be the first election. In the next 200 hundred years everyone in this planet will speak at least one of these 3 languages. As always happens with IL the language will suffer some changes, chinese has already changed a lot and I think this 2 changes will happen in the next 200 years. First, in the future it will be more based on words rather than characters. What? Let me explain it, every character has an intrinsic meaning but if we speak like that we will sound like Confucius and it is very confusing (at least for a foreigner),so now we have words. For example long time ago they used 夷 to refer a foreigner now they use 外国人 which has a clearer meaning. These changes will make clear what is a verb, adjective, noun, etc… and will make it easier to learn, even now most of words are composed by two characters but the usage and function is still tricky. Second, the pinyin revolution will rise, every character in a public advertisement will add its pinyin just like children''s books. These changes will empower the language and will make it more enjoyable for foreigners and even for native speakers.Gabriel Flores,
