A Room for Solace:
An Exhibition of Domestic Interiors
第39屆國際攝影藝術交易商協會攝影展（Association of International Photography Dealers，以下統稱AIPAD）在上週末於紐約曼哈頓94號碼頭（Pier 94）完美落幕。攝影師Alec Soth在本屆 AIPAD 中以策展人的身份策劃了一場特別的展覽。
展覽中包括一系列由室內空間切入描繪親密關係的圖像，這些作品都是出自攝影界最偉大的人物之手:Diane Arbus, Sally Mann, Dorothea Lange, Robert Mapplethorpe, Joel Meyerowitz, 以及Bruce Davidson等。

在本次展覽中Soth想與觀者探討休憩的意義，以及攝影師如何通過捕捉私密場景來展現與公共圖像同樣強大的世界觀。長久以來，攝影師們一直在尋找家庭空間作為拍攝的主題，也是在現如今的一種不確定的時代背景下，這些圖像之間的互相關聯性正是Soth藉由展覽想要與觀者探討的問題。

同時，展覽避開了攝影中經常出現的宏偉史詩般的敘述性故事，而更多的在關注肖像，靜物及記錄攝影中使觀者感到更加親近的人物和場景，比如：廚房裡堆滿了待洗的碗碟，一個年輕女孩跳到她的床上，或者一個房間角落突兀的門口。展覽中部分的攝影作品並沒有被釘在牆上，而是被放置在架子上，每幅作品相互依靠。

“通過這樣一個特別的展覽，我想暫時拋開拍攝喧鬧的公共廣場的攝影，轉而安靜的走進人們的家中，”攝影師Alec Soth在展覽陳述中寫道。“在這些門後，我希望能在這個動盪的時代找到一絲慰藉。” Soth的新書也是如此。

正如Soth所說，在展覽中我們會發現一個有趣的“隱藏在照片中的副主題”: 展出的很多照片都展現了Robert Frank的生活或與之相關。例如，Elliott Erwitt拍攝的Frank與他的妻子跳舞的照片，以及Walker Evans 1959年在紐約拍的照片裡面，便呈現出一個冷酷的街頭攝影師柔軟的一面。

“攝影中所展現的世界如何去回應我們所生活的時代？” Soth問道，並引用了Walker Evans的一幅攝影作品來說明寧靜的家庭生活的重要性。“我想起了Henri-Cartier-Bresson在上世紀50年代對Edward Weston及Ansel Adams的評論：‘現在，此時此刻，去拍攝風景吧！儘管這是一場危機，世界也許會隨之分崩離析！’不可否認，拍攝室內空間的攝影作品亦是面臨同樣的危機。
當整個世界在燃燒時，去拍攝一個壁爐有何意義呢？但緊接著，我轉向Walker Evan在Alabama 拍攝的一張壁爐的圖片。當Evans 在1936年拍攝出這張圖片時，我敢肯定，當時他的感覺正如上世紀50年代Cartier-Bresson所經歷的一樣，整個世界在分崩離析。但是當我現在看到Evans的攝影書Message From the Interior（1966），我感受到的並不是絕望，而是離絕望相反的感覺越來越近。”
