The International Jewelry & Diamond Conference 2018

The International Jewelry & Diamond Conference (Guangzhou) 2018 (hereafter as the Conference), hosted under the guidance of People’s Government of Panyu District, Gems & Jewellery Trade Association of China, China Gold Association and Guangdong Exchange Holding Group, was held on November 27. Co-organized by Guangzhou Diamond Exchange, Guangdong Gems & Jade Exchange (hereinafter as GZDE, GDGJE respectively and the two Exchanges collectively) and Antwerp World Diamond Centre (AWDC), and sponsored by Guangdong Jin Shi Gold Co., Ltd., the Conference was attended by more than 600 delegates from Brazil, Thailand, India, the U.S., Ukraine, Senegal, Belgium, Britain, the Netherlands, Lebanon, Canada, Singapore, Botswana, Israel, South Africa, Australia, Germany as well as Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Taiwan China and mainland China.

At the main forum of “The Dragon and the Diamond, The Glory and the Jewelry”, GDGJD and the International Colored Gemstone Association (ICA) held the debut of the Chinese version InColor Magazine. Mr. Clement Sabbagh, Chairman of the magazine’s editorial board and the ICA; Mr. Yuan Jianrong, former Chairman of the ICA; Ms. Liu Yanhong, Deputy Secretary-General of China Gold Association; Mr. Zhu Yongsheng, Chairman of the Board of the two Exchanges; Mr. Liang Weizhang, General Manager of Guangzhou Diamond Exchange; as well as the editorial board members of the Chinese version of the magazine Mr. Li Zhiwei and Ms. Zhou Zhili attended the premier ceremony. InColor Magazine (English version), an authoritative magazine in the jewelry industry issued globally by ICA, covers many aspects such as international market information on jewelry, cutting-edge research in gemology, fashion design and popularization of knowledge and culture. GDGJD secured the exclusive authorization for the global compilation and distribution rights of the Chinese version of InColor Magazine, and Guangdong Jin Shi Gold Co., Ltd. gave strong support.

In keeping with the hot market topics, the forum, based on its theme, invites Liang Ming, Director of Foreign Trade Research Institute of Chinese Academy of International Trade and Economic Cooperation, the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, to explain the current world economic trend, the situation of international trade, China’s economic performance, cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, and the foreign trade policy orientation and so on, align it with the “six major tasks” and “eight action plans” for the business work in the coming five years as arranged by the Ministry of Commerce, analyze how jewelry enterprises integrate into this and seize comparative advantages and directions of breakthrough, and provide innovative ideas and reference paths for the development of the jewelry industry.

Clement Sabbagh, Chairman of the ICA, shared his views on the trend of the international colored gem market and pointed out how the Chinese jewelry industry can enhance the popularization of colored gemstone culture and build consumer confidence through education and training, establishment of industrial alliances and so on. ICA sets great store by cooperation with the Chinese jewelry industry, and hopes to better contribute to the cooperation between China and the international industry in jewelry education and business by relying on its advantages in resource chain integration from mineral resources to inlay and manufacturing.

Martin Rapaport, founder of the world-renowned Rapaport Diamond Report, delivered a speech in the main forum. With the theme of “State of the Diamond Industry”, he expounded his views on the supply side revolution, from mine to consumer branding and exclusive distribution networks; explore how the internet and online trading platforms are changing how everyone form business to consumers buys and sells diamonds; and analyzed the challenge from synthetics, the impact of external economic forces such as interest rates, inflation and stock market volatility, and the future of diamond prices and demand. The entire speech that lasted an hour and a half marked the climax of the main forum.

Gathering resources and achieving win-win cooperation has become the centerpiece in the current era. The Two Exchanges held sub-fora separately on the afternoon of November 27. GZDE, in concert with rough diamond processing/purchasing companies in China, initiated the establishment of the Rough Diamond Alliance to improve the participation in the rough diamonds sector and optimize China’s diamond industry supply chain. GDGJD established its Designer Club, providing a communication platform for domestic and foreign designers, offering related services such as intellectual property protection and development, and spurring the innovation and upgrading of the industry.

At the diamond forum under the theme of “Built to Last: Optimizing the diamond industry from supply side”, guest speakers carried out discussion from the perspective of optimizing the supply chain of China’s diamond industry: Marcel Pruwer, Special Adviser to Antwerpsche Diamantkring, elaborated on the important role of rough diamonds in the diamond industry chain - Leading from the rear – re-shaping the diamond industry to thrive in a fast-changing, global trade, financial and consumer economy; Karen Rentmeesters, Head of PR & Communications at AWDC, shared innovative technologies in the diamond industrial chain, from mining, processing and manufacturing to diamond trade; Zhang Yongwen, CEO of Shanghai DIAMSLEDGER Information Technology and Saville Stern, Chief Operating Officer of RapNet talked about the application of blockchain in the diamond industry and the profits brought by the online diamond trading platform respectively; Mabel Wong McCormick, the Managing Director of Diamond Producers Association (DPA), elaborated on the latest insights into consumer market and the campaign of “Real is rare. Real is a diamond”. In addition, the forum also organized a panel on the hottest topic in the industry – lab-grown diamonds. Hugh Tanner, Head of the Rough Diamond Sales at De Beers Auction Sales, interpreted the Lab-Grown Diamond Jewelry Initiative - Lightbox for the first time in mainland China; Katrien De Corte, VP of Research & Business Development at HRD Antwerp, fully analyzed the currently available Lab-Grown Diamond Screening Methods; Mainstream Chinese lab-grown diamond producers and retailers, such as Ningbo Crysdiam, Huanghe Whirlwind, Zhongnan Diamond, CARAXY, and Taidiam Technology, discussed the development trend of lab-grown diamond jewelry and its trading system; all together presenting a feast of “lively thinking” for the industry!

GZDE Sub-Forum: Built to Last: Optimizing the diamond industry from supply side

At the jewelry forum themed “Win Through Channel——Synergy of Jewelry Value Chain and Supply Chain”, GDGJE released supply chain services and channel innovation products such as sharing auction and PrizExpress. Professor Yang Mingxing from Gemological Institute of China University of Geosciences (Wuhan) and researcher Wang Yuanhong, Deputy Director and Researcher of Economic Forecasting Department, State Information Center, made an in-depth analysis of the background and direction of the development of the jewelry industry from such perspectives as factor trading platform construction and national economic tax policy. In terms of specific supply chain and industrial chain, Mr. Andrew Lucas, Chief Field Gemologist of Guild Gem Laboratories, and Mr. Vijay Kedia, Executive Member of Jaipur Jewelers Association of India and Director of ICA, harnessed their rich experience to elaborate on the role of education and training, source integration of gem mining and others in improving the transparency of colored gem supply chain and consumer confidence. Mr. Yan Jinsong, General Manager of Chow Tai Fook’s Commodity Management Department, and Mr. Yue Zengkui, Deputy General Manager of Hundsun Commodities and Supply Chain Division, analyzed the important relationship between the vertical integration mode of the industrial chain, technological means and others with brand building and modern enterprise management based on corporate development cases. Innovative representatives of the industry including Fujia Group, Jewelry Sharing Platform Xingfuji, Jewel100, Duizhuang Jade, and Jinhebao explored the jewelry industry supply chain and industrial chain coordination system from the aspects of supply chain services, channel construction, brand building, integration of industry and finance, and new retail. The forum culminated in the brainstorming of sagacious ideas.

GDGJE Sub-forum: Win Through Channel——Synergy of Jewelry Value Chain and Supply Chain

Guangzhou is a city steeped in history and culture along the Belt and Road, an important national center city in China, an international business center and an integrated transportation hub. Guangzhou has a complete ecosystem chain of fashion industry, and jewelry has become an established industrial support for Guangzhou’s fashion industry. After 2016 and 2017, the Two Exchanges again hold the International Jewelry & Diamond Conference 2018 to provide an communicating and matchmaking platform for domestic and foreign industry companies and partners; and explore the improvement of the quality of China’s jewelry and diamond raw material supply system in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative, Greater Bay Area Strategy and the construction of the Free Trade Port. It has promoted openness, sharing, win-win cooperation, effectively enhanced the influence of the jewelry and diamond industry in Panyu, Guangzhou, promoted the integration of China’s jewelry and diamond industry chain into the international market, and moved towards the high end of the value chain.
