繪本賞析
Milly and Molly looked out across the hills from the upstairswindow. They could just see the smoke from BushBob's chimney.
米莉和茉莉從樓上的窗戶向山外望去，她們能看到一股白煙從護林員鮑勃大叔家的煙囪裡冒出來。
"Come on," said Milly.
米莉說：“走吧！”
"Let's surprise him," suggested Molly.
茉莉說：“我們去給他一個驚喜。”
Milly and Molly followed the track along the edge of the bush to BushBob's cottage. They left their footprints in the dewy grass behind them.
米莉和茉莉沿著樹林邊的小路走向鮑勃大叔的小屋，沾滿露水的草地留下了她們一個個腳印。
BushBob threw his arms up in delight. "You rascals," he said. "I think you smelt the bread, fresh from my oven."
鮑勃大叔張開雙臂，高興地說：“你們這些小傢伙，我想你們一定是聞到了我新烤麵包的香味了吧。”
BushBob had a beard the color of his jersey and a hat that never left his head.
鮑勃大叔的鬍子和他的毛衣是一個顏色的，他的頭上總是戴著一頂帽子。
He had a cow that gave him milk for his tea and cream for his porridge.
鮑勃大叔有一隻奶牛。有了它，鮑勃大叔的茶裡就有了香噴噴的牛奶，麥片粥裡也有了香噴噴的奶油。
He had a hen that roosted on his bedhead and laid him an egg for his supper.
鮑勃大叔有一隻母雞，母雞在他的床頭做窩，每天給他下一個雞蛋做晚餐。
His sheep gave him wool for his jerseys and pebbles for his garden.
鮑勃大叔的綿羊給他提供織毛衣的羊毛，還給他的菜園提供肥料。
BushBob grew all his own vegetables and kept bees for his honey.
鮑勃大叔自己在菜園裡種了好多蔬菜，還養了很多蜜蜂來採蜜。
His orchard gave him apples and pears and peaches and plums.
鮑勃大叔的果園裡長滿了蘋果、梨子、桃子和李子。
"Come now," said BushBob, when Milly and Molly were full of fresh bread and honey."Let's sit in the sun and enoy the birds."
米莉和茉莉包餐了一頓新鮮麵包和蜂蜜。這是，鮑勃大叔說：“來，讓我們坐在陽光下欣賞小鳥的歌聲吧。”
MIlly and Molly sat with BushBob on the old bench under the apple tree. They shut their eyes tight and listened.
米莉、茉莉和鮑勃大叔一起坐在蘋果樹下的舊長椅上，他們閉上眼睛傾聽著。
"Just lovely," sighted BushBob. "if you listen very carefully, you will hear the Skylark singing her heart out over the hay paddock in the valley below."
“多好聽啊！”鮑勃大叔說，“如果你們仔細聽的話，你們能聽到雲雀將她的心聲唱遍整個山谷。”
Then BushBob was quiet for a very long time. Milly opened one eye and so did Molly.
鮑勃大叔默默地聽了好長好長的時間。米莉和茉莉偷偷睜開了一直眼睛。
"BushBob, are you there?"
“鮑勃大叔，你睡著了麼？”
"I am enjoying it all for one last time." he said.
鮑勃大叔回答說：“這是我最後一次享受這美妙的聲音。”
Milly and Molly sat up straight with both eyes wide open. "Where are you going?"
米莉和茉莉驚訝地坐了起來，兩隻眼睛睜得大大的，問道：“您要去哪裡呢？”
BushBob explained. "Great Aunt Hattie has died and left me her apartment and a bank full of money.
鮑勃大叔說：“我的姨媽海特去世了，她在城裡留給我一棟房子，還有很多很多錢。”
Milly and Molly's eyes were like saucers. "I know," said BushBob gently. "I am getting old now and besides, you will be able to come and visit me."
米莉和茉莉的眼睛睜得更大更圓了，鮑勃大叔輕聲地說：“我知道，我越來越老了。可是，你們可以去城裡看我啊！”
Milly and Molly knew it wouldn't be the same and as they hugged BushBob and said their thank you's, they wondered if they would ever see him again.
“謝謝！”米莉和茉莉擁抱著鮑勃大叔說，但她們知道以後就不一樣了，她們擔心再也看不到鮑勃大叔了。
"Goodbye BushBob," they called as they waved.
米莉和茉莉一邊揮手一邊喊：“再見，鮑勃大叔！”
BushBob waved his hat until Milly and Molly were too small for his old eyes to see.
鮑勃大叔用力揮動著帽子，知道米莉和茉莉走得再也看不到了。
When Milly and Molly looked out across the hills, the sky was empty without the smoke from BushBob's chimney.
米莉和茉莉再往山外看時，天空中再也看不到從鮑勃大叔的煙囪裡冒出來的煙了。
They could hear the Skylark but her song seemed a sad one.
雲雀仍像以前一樣歌唱，但聽起來好像很悲傷。
BushBob settled into his new appartment.
鮑勃大叔搬到了城裡的新房子裡。
There was a peg for his hat and a balcony with a view.
房子裡有一個可以掛帽子的衣架，還有一個可以看風景的陽臺。
But there is no room for a garden or a tree with an apple.
但是，這裡沒有地方種菜，也沒法種蘋果樹。
There wasn't a hive or a fresh egg for supper. There was no sign of a cow or a sheep for his jerseys and when he shut his eyes tight, there wasn't a bird to be heard.
這裡沒有新鮮蜂蜜和新鮮雞蛋當晚餐，這裡沒有奶牛，也沒有可以產羊毛的綿羊。當他閉上眼睛時，也聽不到小鳥的歌聲。
On his doorstep lived a tramp who had a parrot with a patter and a hat for danations.
在他門前的臺階上，住著一個流浪漢。流浪漢有一隻鸚鵡，還有一個用來盛錢 的帽子。
"What do you say?" asked BushBob. "Give me your parrot and I will give you a bed and a peg for your hat."
鮑勃大叔對流浪漢說：“我用一張床和一個掛帽子的衣架換你的鸚鵡好麼？”
Milly and Molly saw the smoke from BushBob's chimney. They heard the Skylark singing as though her heart would burst.
米莉和茉莉又看到鮑勃大叔的煙囪裡冒出煙來，她們又聽到雲雀唱起快樂的歌。
And when they reached his cottage on the edge of the bush.
當她們來到鮑勃大叔的小屋時，
BushBob threw his arms up in delight.
鮑勃大叔張開雙臂。
"You rascals," he said. "I think you smelt the bread, fresh from my oven."
他說：“你們這些小傢伙，我想你們一定是聞到了我新烤麵包的香味了吧。”
