⭐要注意區分例句中的“the number of”和“a number of”。
☞the number of用來表示事物的數量。當它作為主語的中心詞時，其後的謂語動詞用單數形式。同時，說明數量的多少常用形容詞large和 small來表示。如：
The number of the students in our class is very large. 我們班的學生數量非常大。
☞a number of表示
事物數量多。近義詞有many和a lot of等。a number of後面常跟可數名詞的複數形式，謂語動詞則相應地也用複數形式。如：A number of governments banned the ship from their territorial waters.許多國家都禁止那艘船進入其領海。
Trains could not compete with planes in terms of luxury and convenience.在奢華和便利方面，火車無法與飛機比。
⭐in terms of在上文中表示“根據；就……而言；在……方面”。
☞表示這個意思的詞語還有很多，例如：considering, regarding等。
☞in terms of還可以表示“用……術語、語言、字眼”。表達這個意思的時候，句型則比較自由多變，可以直接說成in XX terms或是in terms that等。舉一個簡單的例子：
The figures are expressed in terms of percentage/in percentage terms.那些數字是以百分數表示的。
They know the factors that play a positive role in keeping down body weight.

⭐上文中的“keep down”表示“使（數目、大小、數量等）保持在低水平”，可以理解為“control”。keep down還能引申出“鎮壓、壓制”和“不使（食物或飲料）吐出”的意思。來看兩個例句更好地理解一下吧：
In old days, no matter what a woman tries to do to improve her situation, there is some barrier or attitude to keep her down.過去，女性無論如何努力去改善自己的處境，總會受到一些障礙或看法的壓制。

⭐play a role in something是一個很常用的固定詞組，表示“在事情中扮演什麼樣的角色；起到什麼樣的作用”。為了強調重要性可以說play an important role in something，例句如下：

Please leave me alone.請讓我靜一靜。
⭐leave me alone表示“讓我靜一靜”。leave somebody後面加形容詞可以表示使某人置於什麼狀態之下。
☞alone強調的是客觀狀態，你獨自一人，沒有人陪伴；
☞lonely則更強調內心的孤苦，可能你在現實生活中並不是一個人，但是你心裡卻始終覺得孤寂。有一個表達很有意思：
I'm alone, but I'm never lonely.
我孤身一人，但我從不寂寞。
You may make use of his library.你可以利用他的圖書館。
⭐上文的“make use of”表示“利用、使用”，其實跟單獨使用use的意思差不多。
☞強調use的程度時可以在use前加形容詞來修飾，如：make full/good use of。
☞之前我們也講到過take advantage這個詞組，它們都可以表示使用和利用，區別在於後者的“欺騙、利用”等貶義更濃，而前者不在“use”前加上修飾程度的形容詞時，只是表示“使用”的意思。
