崇寧重寶系北宋徽宗崇寧年間鑄(公元1102年~1106年)，幣質有銅、鐵、銀。 崇寧重寶為隸書銅、鐵大錢，製作多亦精好，存世較多。崇寧重寶錢文隸書，古樸方正，嚴謹莊重，法度固定。有人認為，崇寧重寶錢文也是徽宗所書，但史無定論。重寶版別幾百種，面背記號多，有花穿、決文、面星、背星月紋等，常能見到。 關於此錢，有一個傳說，謂其面文為蔡京所書，而蔡京書寫時別有用心地將“崇”字的山和宗的豎筆上下貫通，連成一線;將“寧”字繁體之中的“心”省略，被人指責為“有意破宋，無心寧國”。“崇寧”錢存世尚多，版別亦多，但迄今並未發現有如上所說這種寫法的錢幣。自然也有根據以上說法造假的，但那很容易辨別出來。因此這段傳說得不到印證，至今仍是一個謎。 公元1100年1月，北宋皇帝哲宗病故，由其弟趙佶接替做了北宋第八任皇帝，為宋徽宗。徽宗“性甚機巧，優於技藝”，終日沉迷於書法繪畫，不理朝綱。他在位25年，先後鑄造了聖宋通寶、崇寧重寶(通寶)、大觀通寶、政和通寶(重寶)、重和通寶、宣和通寶(元寶)等6種錢幣。
