It’s not WASTE until it is WASTED!

With the World Environment Day coming, our school is now requiring every student to form a habit of sorting(分類)the waste. Here in our schoolyard we lay four different colors of rubbish bins for different kinds of rubbish. The red is for harmful waste;the blue is for waste that can be recycled; the green is for kitchen waste; the yellow is for other waste.

The followings are some instructions for you.

Glass:Empty bottles without caps can be recycled to make new glass bottles.

Warning: Mirrors and light bulbs(電燈泡) must not be included in the glass waste.

Paper:Newspapers, magazines, boxes must be clean enough to be recycled.

Warning: Paper tissues(餐紙) and wall paper are not recyclable as paper and should be kept separately.

PMD waste: Packaging made of Plastic or Metal and Drink boxes are used to make new packaging.

Warning: Plastic pots (e.g. yoghurt pots),plastic bags must not be included with the PMD waste.

Harmful waste: out-of-date drugs, used batteries, paint and oil…

Besides,if you don’t need your old bikes at all,our school volunteers will collect them. We’re going to fix them up and then give them away to kids who don’t have enough money for a bike.

Tigers are strong and dangerous animals. But now they are in danger.

In the past, there were eight kinds of tigers in the world. But during the 20th century, only five were left. The number of Siberian tigers (東北虎) was about 300, but now it is less than 22. They’re in danger of dying out. If the government does nothing, we won’t be able to see them in ten to twenty years.

In order to stop people from hunting and killing wild tigers, and in order to make wild tigers more, the World Wildlife Fund (世界自然基金會) has started a program (項目) recently (最近). China and twelve other countries joined it.

However, it’s not enough. Remember that nature is a food chain (鏈). If we hurt and kill too many wild deer and pigs, wild tigers will die out because of hunger (飢餓). So the most important thing is to save the animals that tigers eat. In order to protect the wild tigers, we need call on (號召) more people to stop eating, hunting and killing wild animals.

1. During the 20th century, ____ kinds of wild tigers were left.

A.why and how do we protect the wild tigers.

B.the government does everything they could to protect the wild tigers.

C.the wild tigers will die out in ten to twenty years.

D.the most important thing is to save the animals that tigers eat.

It’s important to learn about protecting our environment. Here is a 5R rule for us:

Reduce

If you want to reduce waste, you should use things wisely(明智地).A larger number of trees are cut down to make paper. If everyone uses paper carelessly, soon we will not have any trees left. Other things are also being wasted, and people don’t know what to do with the waste in big cities. So it is necessary to use things wisely.

Reuse

You should always think of reusing the usable things before throwing them away. For example, you can give your clothes you do not wear any more to the poor. In a family, you may pass on such clothes to younger brothers or sisters.

Recycle

Bottles, cans and paper can easily be recycled. By recycling them we save lots of time and money. For example, Coke cans are sent to a factory, where they are smashed flat(壓平)and melted(融化)and the metal things are made for new Coke cans.

Recover(恢復)

When you buy a box of apples, there may be a few rotten(腐爛的)apples, you have two choices(選擇): one is to throw the whole apples away, or you can cut off the rotten parts and keep the good parts. In the way, you are recovering the eatable(能吃的) parts of food.

Repair

If one of the legs of your table is broken, you can repair it. If you want to change for better ones, it is better for you to sell the old things or give them to other people who can use them after doing some repair.

D.to throw the whole things away.

4. Which is the best way to do with your broken tables?

A. Throwing them away

The Earth has warmed by about half a degree(0.5℃)over the last 100 years. It could be getting warmer on its own,but many scientists think that people are making the Earth warmer by making a greenhouse effect(溫室效應).The greenhouse effect is important. Without it, the Earth would not be warm enough for us to live on. But just a little warmer than it is now could cause(引起)problems for humans, plants and animals.

Many of the things we do every day can change the Earth's temperature by sending greenhouse gases(廢氣) into the air. We send greenhouse gases into the air when we watch TV, turn on lights, dry hair, play video games, wash or dry our clothes or drive cars. The rubbish(waste) from factories and homes also produces greenhouse gases.

Even a small change in temperature can affect(影響) our weather. This can cause changes in the sea levels, the air, flooding, and our fresh water.

The change in the temperature can also cause changes in the living places for animals and plants, endangering many animals.

Global warming(全球變暖) is a big problem, and every little bit we do can help. We can save electricity. We can save energy in other ways such as by taking buses or walking rather than driving cars. We can recycle to reduce the rubbish and save natural resources such as trees, oil and metals. We can buy products that don't do bad to the environment and we can turn to solar energy. Remember the little bit that you do will bring a better world.

1. Which of the following does not send greenhouse gases into the air?

A.Turning on a light.

B.Walking to school.

C.Driving a car.

D.Watching TV.

2. In this passage, the scientists are mainly trying to make the readers realize ____.

Are you shy? If you are, you are not alone. In fact, close to 50 percent of people are shy. Almost 80 percent of people feel shy sometimes. Shyness is becoming more and more common. Now, scientists are trying to understand shyness. They have some interesting ideas about why people are shy.

Is it possible to be born shy? Many scientists say yes. They say 15 to 20 percent of babies behave shyly. These babies are a little quieter than other babies. Interestingly, these shy babies usually have shy parents. So scientists think that some shyness is genetic.

Family size might cause people to be shy as well. Scientists at Harvard University studied shy children. They found that 66 percent of them had elder brothers and sisters. As a result, they became shy. At the same time, children with no brothers or sisters may be shy as well. Growing up alone, they often play by themselves.

You may also be shy because of where you were born. When scientists studied shyness in different countries, they found surprising differences. In Japan, most people said they were shy. But in Israel(以色列), only one of three people said so. What explains the difference? One scientist says the Japanese and Israelis have different opinions of failure. In Japan, when people don’t succeed, they feel bad about themselves. They blame(責備)themselves for their failure. In Israel, the truth is opposite. Israelis often blame failure on external (外在的) reasons, such as family, teachers, friends, or bad luck. In Israel, freedom of opinion and risk taking are strongly supported. This may be why Israelis worry less about failure and are less shy.

For shy people, it can be difficult to make friends or speak loudly in class. But scientists say you can get over your shyness. They suggest trying new things and practicing conversation. And don’t forget—if you are shy, you are not the only one.

1.How many percent of people feel shy sometimes?

A.50 %.

B.66 %.

C.80 %.

D.15 to 20 %.

2.The following facts are the causes of shyness EXCEPT ____.

A.family size

C.be born shy

D.dream for jobs

3.The underlined word “genetic” means “____” in Chinese.

A.遺傳的

B.可怕的

C.有趣的

D.無能為力的

4.Scientists suggest that shy people can get over their shyness by ____.

A.blaming their failure on outside reasons

B.trying new things and practicing conversation

C.getting themselves away from their shy parents

D.trying to understand reasons for their shyness

5.Which is the main idea of the article?

A.Difficulties to get over shyness.

B.Get over shyness, you are not alone.

C.Shyness is one of the most important feelings.

D.Scientists who are trying to understand shyness finally succeed.

Now satellites are helping to forecast(預報)the weather. They are in space, and they can reach any part of the world. The satellites take pictures of the atmosphere(大氣), because this is where the weather forms(形成). They send these pictures to the weather stations. Some meteorologists(氣象學家)can see the weather of any part of the world. From the pictures, the scientists can often say how the weather will change.

Today, nearly five hundred weather stations in sixty countries receive satellite pictures. When they receive new pictures, the meteorologists compare(比較)them with earlier ones. Perhaps they may find that the clouds have changed during the last few hours. This may mean that the weather on the ground may soon change, too. In their next weather forecast, the meteorologists can say this.

So the weather satellites are a great help to the meteorologists. Before satellites were invented, the scientists could forecast the weather for about 24 or 48 hours. Now they can make good forecasts for three or five days. Soon, perhaps, they may be able to forecast the weather for a week or more ahead(提前).

1.Satellites travel _____.

A.in space

B.in the atmosphere

C.above the ground

D.above space
