世界各地越來越多的人開始學習中文。在4月16日直播的《新時代大講堂》中，有一名叫做洪明偉（Max Horne）的美國小夥兒引起了大家的關注。他就讀於哈佛大學，卻說著一口標準流利的中文，一點都不比native差。
小洪12歲開始學習中文，曾多次來中國旅遊和參加各種活動。這次疫情當中，洪明偉也見證了中國和美國相繼暴發疫情的情形。在中國暴發疫情之初，洪明偉就專門拍攝了“加油武漢、加油中國”主題的短視頻來表達他對中國抗疫工作的支持。之後紐約疫情開始暴發，他所在的哈佛大學出現確診病例，紐約成為美國疫情中心，疫情也對他的生活產生巨大影響，但他相信中國的抗“疫”成功經驗讓美國人看到希望。
洪明偉回想起學習中文時、在中國遊歷時的經歷和感悟，結合自己的經歷，他在《新時代大講堂》中這篇感情真摯又理性客觀的優秀演講講述了他對中美兩個家的深厚感情。

Seeing Wuhan’s lockdown conclude and daily life return to an almost-normal rhythm, we New Yorkers are given hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel, and while it may be hard to see here, the restoration of vibrancy and vitality in China give us optimism.
看到武漢解封，日常生活逐漸恢復正常的節奏，我們紐約人有了希望。抗“疫”之戰有一線曙光，雖然現在可能很難看到，但中國恢復了生機和活力，讓我們樂觀起來。
To me, the study of a new language is the study of greater empathy and compassion, and I feel that engagement with China has offered me just that.
對我來說，學習一門新語言，就是學習加深同理共情。我感到與中國的交流正讓我有這樣的收穫。
Filming short, lighthearted videos dwarfs in comparison to the work of medical professionals, but I wanted to show, at a time of growing tension in U.S.-China relations, that countless members of the American public wish to deepen engagement with China through people-to-people exchange and an eye to globalism. We, the Mandarin students, the undergraduates, the travelers, and so many more yearn for a model of the U.S. as an open country, not a nation of isolationist voices.
雖然遠比不上專業醫務人員的工作，但是我想表明，在中美關係日益緊張之際，無數美國人希望加強與中國的聯結，通過民間交流和著眼全球主義。我們這些普通話學習者、大學生、遊客還有更多人，都希望美國是一個開放的國家，而不是一個孤立主義至上的國家。

Most of all, I am grateful to those fighting on the frontlines that allow us to study without hindrance in the safety of our own homes, and I sincerely hope that all members of the Harvard community, including our President Bacow, who have become infected will quickly recover.

Acting as one family takes many forms: the need for close communication, collaboration, and coordination between the world’s nations is more important than ever. Continued creation of open, accessible information regarding the epidemic worldwide is paramount, as is keeping the public well-informed.
維繫這個大家庭體現在諸多方面，國家之間密切溝通，合作與協調的需求比以往更加重要。持續公開無障礙地發佈全球疫情信息至關重要，這也是讓公眾知情的關鍵。
My city is sick, but my love for it is unchanged; my second home was sick, but my affinity for it remained.
我的城市病了，但我對它的愛沒有改變；之前我的第二個家病了，但我與它的緊密聯繫沒有改變。

Hello to you all from the great State of New York! Hello everybody! My name is Max Horne or in Chinese Hong Mingwei and I am delighted to share with you some of my thoughts and experiences from the epicenter of the United States coronavirus outbreak. While the efforts of frontline medical workers are showing results better days for New York remain far-off. Seeing Wuhan's lockdown conclude and daily life return to an almost-normal rhythm we New Yorkers are given hope. There is a light at the end of the tunnel and while it may be hard to see here the restoration of vibrancy and vitality in China give us optimism.

A little more about myself: I am a first-year student at Harvard College studying East Asian Languages and Civilizations. Since beginning my study of Chinese in middle school I have made numerous trips to China forming close relationships and gaining a more nuanced understanding of the complexities of modern China. To me, the study of a new language is the study of greater empathy and compassion and I feel that engagement with China has offered me just that.

When Wuhan was first to be hit hard by the outbreak it felt quite distant. As the virus quickly spread, though I felt a responsibility to a place so special to me. I filmed a few "Stay strong, Wuhan; stay strong, China" videos to show my support for those fighting on the frontlines against the virus. As Americans we have a moral obligation to multilateralism and an ever stronger obligation to show the world just how committed we are to that sort of engagement. This is the best of America; we are good because we have empathy. 當武漢剛剛遭受疫情重創時，我感覺離我很遙遠。但隨著病毒的快速傳播，我覺得我有責任，為這座對我有特殊意義的城市做些什麼。我拍攝了一些“加油武漢，加油中國”的視頻，以此來聲援前線抗擊病毒的人們。作為美國人，我們對多邊主義負有道義上的責任，我們還有與日俱增的責任，向世界展示我們擁護多邊主義的堅定態度。這是美國最大的優點。我們有同情心。拍攝簡短輕鬆的視頻，雖然遠比不上專業醫務人員的工作，但是我想表明，在中美關係日益緊張之際，無數美國人希望加強與中國的聯結，通過民間交流和著眼全球主義。我們這些普通話學習者、大學生、遊客還有更多人，都希望美國是一個開放的國家，而不是一個孤立主義至上的國家。
Through the videos I hoped to show a down-to-earth picture of Harvard and the keen interest in China that many in the American academic world continue to have. The Harvard Association of US-China Relations or HAUSCR of which I am a member has also begun to create "Stay strong, Wuhan" videos and think about how we can continue our programming in the phase of the virus' spread.
通過這些視頻，我希望給大家展示一些哈佛真實的情況，以及眾多美國學界人士對中國持之以恆的濃厚興趣。哈佛中美關係協會，我也是其中一員。協會也開始製作“加油武漢”的視頻 並思考如何繼續開展工作，在疫情傳播的大背景之下。
Illness does not respect borders. In late January, when students and professors converged at Harvard for the second semester the virus felt distant and opaque. We were vaguely aware of the grave situation in China but had yet to confront the possibility of widespread infection here in the United States. It was the quiet before the storm and then, everything changed. In early march, Harvard prohibited all international travel and limited domestic travel. Then, on March 10, Harvard entered a new phase. All classes were moved online and students were given just 5 days to vacate dormitories and depart their campus for the year. A surreal atmosphere engulfed the campus and we spent as much time with friends as possible. Standing in front of a long period of isolation these few days were true togetherness. In just three days the first Harvard student tested positive for coronavirus. On March 24th, Harvard University president Larry Bacow tested positive for coronavirus. Luckily, he has since recovered along with his wife. Harvard also took care to emphasize the need to treat all students, including those of Chinese descent with the upmost respect during this time.
疾病不分國界。1月下旬，當師生重聚哈佛校園開啟第二學期時，病毒還是遙不可及。雖然我們略有耳聞中國的嚴峻局勢，但並沒有預想到疫情在美國廣泛傳播的可能。那是暴風雨前的平靜，之後一切都變了。3月初，哈佛大學開始禁止國際旅行，限制國內旅行。3月10日，哈佛的疫情防控進入新階段。所有課程轉移至線上，學生們只有5天時間，清空宿舍離開校園。一種不真實的氛圍籠罩著校園。我們都儘可能多地和朋友在一起。面臨漫長的隔離期，這幾天是真正的患難與共。僅三天後，哈佛首現新冠病毒檢測陽性的學生。3月24日，哈佛大學校長勞倫斯·巴考新冠病毒檢測呈陽性。幸運的是，他後來和妻子一起康復了。哈佛大學還強調在這段時期，要給予學生，包括華裔學生，以最大的尊重。
Here are some thoughts that I wrote down after leaving Harvard and beginning online classes: In my experience Harvard's administration acted with the utmost care, diligence, and compassion working to make the best decisions for the community based on expert predictions and the best available information. I am grateful to my professors, classmates, and administrators for working tirelessly to make the transition to online learning smooth. We may not have a campus but we have each other! Individuals of the highest moral character and intellectual capabilities have always been the most important part of the Harvard community and that remains even in the absence of a physical campus. Based on my observation the challenge that we now face is not how to continue high quality education but how to encourage students and professors to form the interpersonal bonds that make education meaningful. I am confident that the Harvard community will rise to the occasion and look forward to continuing to form meaningful interpersonal relationships with my professors this semester. Most of all, I am grateful to those fighting on the frontlines that allow us to study without hindrance in the safety of our own homes and I sincerely hope that all members of the Harvard community including our president Bacow who have become infected will quickly recover, as he has.

It wasn't only the Harvard administration who would have to cope with these new realities. The Harvard China Forum of which I am a member promotes constructive dialogue between the two countries, China and the US, at Harvard. Despite our in-person 2020 conference being cancelled the Forum hopes to facilitate online dialogue during this unprecedented time to strengthen the US China relationship. We are currently exploring creative ways to bring together experts on the medical, financial and social impacts of the epidemic. These are unprecedented times and innovative, unorthodox channels for promoting much-needed cross-cultural exchange are ever more important. We are apart physically but together in spirit.

A Harvard student who I have come to admire greatly has also started an online platform that I learned about in the news where friends and classmates can donate money to buy meals for healthcare workers fighting on the frontlines in the City of New York. This classmate's father owns a number of restaurants in New York City and they use the donations to cook food for healthcare workers and deliver meals daily to hospitals throughout the city. If logistically possible I hope to create my own version of this project here on Long Island and plan to begin work on that very soon.

In the "Stay strong, Wuhan" video I said that "China is my second home." For me that is the simplest most profound and most important feeling I have about the pandemic.

China is my second home. To illustrate this point I would like to tell a short story. In the summer of 2016 I joined a trip through Where There Be Dragons to Tibetan areas of Sichuan, Qinghai, and The Tibet Autonomous Region. As part of the trip we did a homestay with Tibetan nomads in their tents, herding yaks and drinking butter tea. The tent had only one mattress which the family generously offered to me. When they saw I was unused to eating sitting on the floor they drove hours to a nearby village and brought a small table and stool back for me. As we drove down the bumpy dirt road in the middle of the vast grassland the tents in the far east and a Tibetan monastery to the far west my homestay father turned to me and said "we are family" or "we are all part of one global family." Acting as one family takes many forms: the need for close communication collaboration, and coordination between the world's nations is more important than ever. Continued creation of open, accessible information regarding the epidemic worldwide is paramount as is keeping the public well-informed.

My city is sick but my love for it is unchanged; my second home was sick but my affinity for it remained. Through a high school exchange program to Suzhou I developed a wonderful relationship with my homestay sister and remain in close contact with her today. Having been through weeks of quarantine and emerged even stronger she has been a source of great support to me during this challenging time not to mention a great partner with which I can practice my Chinese! As I was finishing up this speech I received a WeChat from her that read I am a good cook now! Next time you come to Suzhou I will cook you something delicious. I want nothing more than this: safety, health, and the return to normalcy.
我的城市病了，但我對它的愛不變。我的第二個家曾經病了，但我對它的愛猶存。通過高中時期參加的蘇州交流項目，我和寄宿家庭姐姐建立了深厚情誼，時至今日仍保持密切聯絡。 過去幾周的隔離，讓姐姐愈發堅強，她在如今的艱難時刻大力支持我，當然她也是我練習中文的好搭檔！在我即將完成這篇演講時，我收到她發來的微信。“我現在是大廚了！下次你來蘇州，我給你做好吃的。”這正是我現在想要的：平安、健康、和迴歸正常生活。
During the My China Album story-sharing event Chinese ambassador to the United States Cui Tiankai suggested I visit Linzhi in Tibet to view the blossoming spring flowers. Cheers to you all and to a spring in Linzhi and everywhere blossoming with life and love. This is tough. But China is emerging from this crisis and soon we will too.
