Lesson 71 He’s awful
What’s Ron Marston like, Pauline?
He’s awful! He telephoned me four times yesterday, and three times the day before yesterday.
He telephoned the office yesterday morning and yesterday afternoon. My boss answered the telephone.
What did your boss say to him?
He said, “Pauline is typing letters .She can’t speak to you now!”
Then I arrived home at six o’clock yesterday evening. He telephoned again. But I didn’t answer the phone!
Did he telephone again last night?
Yes, he did. He telephoned at nine o’clock.
What did you say to him?
I said, “This is Pauline’s mother. Please don’t telephone my daughter again!”
Did he telephone again?
No, he didn’t!

二、每課一句
He telephoned me four times yesterday, and three times the day before yesterday.
本課繼續學習一般過去時，但側重的是動詞過去式的變化規則的學習，本課學習的是規則變化，即+ed的情況，主要規則如下：
1、直接+ed，如：worked, played, rained。
2、以不發音的e結尾的，直接+d，如：telephoned, arrived。
3、以“輔音字母+y”結尾的，改y為i，再+ed，如：studied, cried。
4、以重讀閉音節結尾的，雙寫最後一個輔音字母，再+ed，如：skipped, crammed。
【注意】
動詞過去式詞尾-ed的發音，主要規則是“清清濁元濁”，即：
1、當-ed位於清輔音後面時，讀作清輔音/t/，如：worked中的k讀作清輔音/k/，所以-ed讀作清輔音/t/。
2、當-ed位於元音或濁輔音後面時，讀作濁輔音/d/，如：played中的ay讀作元音/eɪ/，rained中的n讀作濁輔音/n/，所以它們後面的-ed讀作濁輔音/d/。
需要注意的是，在以-t或-d結尾的動詞後面，如果加上-ed，此時的-ed讀作/ɪd/。如：
wanted ['wɒntɪd]
raided ['reɪdɪd]

本課除了學習動詞過去式-ed的變化規則以外，另一個有關一般過去時的重點內容是標誌詞yesterday系列的用法，即如果出現由yesterday引導的過去時間時，句子的謂語動詞一般都要採用一般過去時。
常見的yesterday系列的標誌詞有：
yesterday
yesterday morning/afternoon/evening
the day before yesterday
