有一回，John和国外老板提了一个海外行销的点子。老板回答他：”What’s the big idea?”
他听见”big idea”，还以为老板赞美他的想法，是大有可为的计划。和他想的刚好相反，因为老板接下来就说了：
I couldn’t approve your plan. （我可不同意你的计划。）
当我们说某人有”big idea”其实是正面的意思，指「有远大的理想、有抱负」，例如：
She's got big ideas about starting up her own company. （她有很远大的理想，想要自己创业。）
但如果用在疑问句”What’s the big idea?”，就有讽刺的意味。对这句话的解释，剑桥字典说是：”used to ask someone why they have done something annoying”（用于问人为什么做了一件那么讨厌的事）

正确：你搞什么？
多看两个例句熟悉用法：
What's the big idea of shouting at me?（你干嘛对我大吼？）
What's the big idea? I was watching that program!（干嘛？你没看到我在看节目吗？）
Big这个字虽然简单，但也因为太简单、太常用、太口语，反而会错意，来看看几big这个字的惯用法：
talk big
错误：说话很大声。
正确：吹牛、说大话。
Ｈe talks big, but can’ t produce anything.（他光说大话，可是什么东西也做不出来。）
play in the big leagues
错误：在大联盟打球
正确：承担大事
You’d better shape up if you want to play in the big leagues.（如果你想承担这一重任，最好还是表现得好一点。）
大联盟在英文里是Major League Baseball，不是big league；相对地，小联盟就是Minor League Baseball。

错误：在大道上
正确：非常、极端
This hotel chain is expanding in a big way.（这连锁饭店扩张得极为迅速。）
用作动词的意思：（美国俚语）大获成功，大受欢迎
big name
错误：大名
正确：重要人物、大咖
Are there any big names in the movie?（这部电影里有大明星吗？）
She's a big name in politics.（她是一位政界要人。）
