Q&A
什么是名词呢?
名词(Noun) 是指表示人、地方、事物、抽象概念、活动行为等的名称词。
(a word that refers to a person, a place or a thing, a quality or an activity)
For example:
表示人:boy, girl, teacher, father, doctor
表示地方:park, home, zoo, classroom, school
表示事物:door, window, book, apple, water
表示抽象概念:beauty, health, happiness, fun, history
表示活动行为:tennis, swimming, wedding...
名词有数种分类方法,下图作为其中之一可以作为参考。
What's More
我们今天主要了解下专有名词。
专有名词(proper Noun)
专有名词是指这个词只代表一个单一对象(唯一的存在),比如人名、地名等。既然专有名词的对象只有一个,是唯一的存在,那么一说出来就知道是谁了。
For example:
Jim Green is my classmate.
吉姆·格林是我的同学。
(注:我的同学中只有一个叫Jim Green的,是唯一存在的对象,一说就出来就知道是谁了)
I'm going to China.
我要去中国。
(注:世界上只有一个中国)
划重点:真正的专有名词前不能加冠词(the、a/an)。
那么问题来了:太阳、月亮是唯一的存在,应该是专有名词,可是为什么是the sun,the moon?
答:有一类专有名词是假的(#^.^#)
我们分别看下这两个词的英英解释:
The Sun refers to the star that shines in the sky during the day and gives the earth heat and light
(注:the sun是一颗在白天给地球传递热量和光的恒星(star),既然是一颗恒星就不是唯一存在的,所以sun不是专有名词)
The Moon refers to the natural satellite that moves around the earth and shines at night by light reflected from the sun
(注:the moon是一颗围着地球转、并且在晚上将太阳光反射到地球上的卫星(satellite),卫星同样可有很多颗,不是唯一的存在,所以moon也不是专有名词)
同理,作为世界上独一无二存在的美国The United State of America也不属于专有名词,大家可以试着分析一下。
Tips
有的语法书上说,专有名词是特指,不能加冠词。但是又说了另一条语法规则:有些词例外,比如山川、河流、杂志、旅馆等。其实,我们在这一点上完全没有必要死记硬背,只要好好分析下,就会很容易对专有名词进行确认。
