作为连词，when有两种功能，一是用作并列连词（已在Episode 1中进行了讲解），二是充当从属连词。本集就来讲一讲作为从属连词的when的几种常见用法。
I. 引导时间状语从句
1. About 3,700 people were on the Diamond Princess when it arrived at the port on February 3.
2. When I was ten years old, I got along well with my brother.
从上面两个例句中，我们可以看出when的意思是“当……时候”，既可以表示一点时间（at the time）也可表示一段时间(during the time)。同时我们也要关注when的省略句，如：
3. When (I was) walking along the street, I met a friend of mine.
4. When (she was) asked about her age, Jane said it was a secret.
5. When (I was) in university, I went to the library twice a week.
II. 引导定语从句
6. I’ll never forget the days when we stayed together.
7. 4 o’clock was the hour when I used to get up in the morning.
引导定语从句时，when在从句中作时间状语，即可表示一段时间（in/during the days），也可表示一点时间（at 4 o’clock）。
III. 引导名词性从句
8. When we will set out tomorrow is not decided yet. （主语从句）
9. I knew when he came back home last night. （宾语从句）
10. The problem is when we can collect so much money. （表语从句）
11. I have no idea when he was studying in this university. （同位语从句）
when引导名词性从句时既可以指一段时间，也可指一点时间；同时when既可以指确定的时间，相当于状语从句和定语从句中的when，也可指不确定的时间，相当于特殊疑问词when的含义。另外，注意when to do sth.的用法，如：
12. You’ll be informed when to leave for New York tomorrow.
