有人問我，“兩個人”英語是 two persons 還是 two people？
這個問題的關鍵點在於“人”的複數到底是 persons 還是 people，如果都是，那麼兩者區別又是什麼？
從詞源來說，這兩個詞都來自於拉丁語。
person 先傳到英語國家，也順帶著產生了 persons 這樣的複數形式。
people 是晚傳到英語裡的，person 的複數一開始就是persons”。
後來 “people” 這個字也開始流傳到英語國家，似乎取代了 “persons” 。
可是有些時候我們仍然能看到 persons。
person 比 people 更書面、更正式，比如一部電梯的說明說裡，可以有這樣的介紹：
This lift can hold a maximum of 15 persons.
這部電梯最高容納15人。
由此可見，people 比 persons 表達的複數相對更偏口語。
另外還有幾個原則注意：
Persons 指可以明確可數的一群人，比如：
There are three persons in the room.
房間裡有三個人。
當然，people 也有這個功能，上句話也可以說：there are three people in the room。
但是對於一群“數不出來”的人，就不能用 persons 了。
比如：
A lot of people were at the party.
派對上有很多人。
這裡不可以用 persons，因為這裡沒有明確的人數。
最後總結一下，雖然語法書沒有寫出，但事實上people作為person的複數形式已成既定事實。
但是在某些特殊語境，比如司法界，專業報告中，可能會用到 “Persons” 這個英文單詞。比如警方的“失蹤人口”，英文是 “Missing persons”、“嫌疑人士”是 “Persons of interest” ，因為這種情況下，要求文本更 formal 更嚴肅。
