本文是我的第14篇双语精读
精读之前
本材料，罐头菌都是每天辛苦整理起来的，所以很希望你能好好利用起来，假如好好看，对你的帮助肯定很大。本材料能这样用：
一.做精读。罐头菌会给与一些词汇表达出来，但你也可以自己进行查询，分析长难句。
二.英译汉/汉译英。双方向翻译，并与原文做对比，对于考翻译，锻炼写作的人来说，能好好地锻炼布局与论证。
三.精听。文章会附带音频，可以进行精听，虽然耗时，但是对于英语综合能力有很好地提高作用。
四.复述。放音频，暂停，并重新说出原文或用自己的话表达同样意思，并进行对比，能很好地锻炼自己的表达。
五.工具。最后一点我觉得是最重要的一点，对于段落的内容，我会加入一些我本人的拙见。英语作为语言是一个工具，大家不要为了学英语而学英语，学英语是为了扩展自己的眼界，接触更加多的内容而存在的。

“THE BIRTHDAY of a new world is at hand.” Ever since Thomas Paine penned those words in 1776, America has seen itself as the land of the new—and Europe as a continent stuck in the past. Nowhere is that truer than in the tech industry. America is home to 15 of the world’s 20 most valuable tech firms; Europe has one. Silicon Valley is where the brainiest ideas meet the smartest money. America is also where the debate rages loudly over how to tame the tech giants, so that they act in the public interest. Tech tycoons face roastings by Congress for their firms’ privacy lapses. Elizabeth Warren, a senator who is running for president in 2020, wants Facebook to be broken up.

1.“THE BIRTHDAY of a new world is at hand.” Ever since Thomas Paine penned those words in 1776, America has seen itself as the land of the new—and Europe as a continent stuck in the past.
“新世界诞生在即。”自1776年托马斯·潘恩（Thomas Paine）写下这句话以来，美国一直自视为新大陆，视欧洲为守旧的大陆。
（1）At hand除了表示在手边，手头上的意思之外，还能表示：即将来临的意思。例如考试季的时候我们就可以说：The examination is near at hand.考试临近了。
（2）Pen，作为名词，我们都知道是“笔”的意思，但还可以作为动词，表示“写”的意思。例句：She penned a note of thanks to her hostess.她给女主人写了一封感谢信。
（3）Stuck in，一般表示“受困，深陷”的意思。这里可以很形象地比喻成一个守旧的大陆（continent）。
2.Nowhere is that truer than in the tech industry. America is home to 15 of the world’s 20 most valuable tech firms; Europe has one.
科技行业最符合这种认知。全球20家最具价值的科技公司中，美国佔了15家，而欧洲只有一家。
（1）be home to，…..的家乡。例句：Sichuan is home to pandas .四川是熊猫的家乡。
3.Silicon Valley is where the brainiest ideas meet the smartest money.
在硅谷，世界上最聪明的想法与最明智的投资汇合在一起。
(1)这里的money一般不会翻译成“金钱”的意思，不然很难翻译与理解。Money在某些情况下会表达“投资”的意思，例如说be good money指“赚钱的投资”，be bed money“亏钱的投资”，因此这里的smartest money应该是“最明智的投资”。
(2)Meet，这个词很形象地表明硅谷作为一个世界高科技公司汇集的地方主要源于好的想法加上相应的投资。
4.America is also where the debate rages loudly over how to tame the tech giants, so that they act in the public interest.
与此同时，美国也在激烈争论如何驯服这些科技巨头，以让它们的行动符合公众利益。
（1）debate over，讨论焦点。一般对于表示讨论（debate）的问题焦点，前面都会用over来表示，例如：Why are we having a debate over Social Security?为什么我们对社会保障存在争议呢。
（2）这里为了表达争论的激烈，用了“rages loudly”来表现。Rage，狂怒，激怒，loudly，大声地，吵闹地。很容易就让人联想到一间会议室里面大家争论得脸红耳赤的场面。
（3）Tame，驯服。Tamer，就是我们所熟知的驯兽师。例句：After a few months' contact the monkeys become very tame.經過幾個月的接觸，那些猴子變得非常溫順了。
5.Tech tycoons face roastings by Congress for their firms’ privacy lapses.
科技大佬们因为他们的企业存在隐私漏洞而遭到国会痛批。
（1）tycoons，商业巨头，大亨。在经济学人中经常用于表示大型的企业或者公司“大佬。例如说经济学人就曾经这样形容李嘉诚：Li Ka-shing, Asia's most powerful business tycoon（李嘉诚，亚洲最强大的商业大亨）。
（2）roast，批评，挖苦。Roast一般表示“烤，烘焙”的意思，很少有人知道其实它还有“批评，挖苦”的意思。因为人在被批评的时候，就像在炉上被烤一样难受，所以渐渐就引申出“批评”意思。
6.Elizabeth Warren, a senator who is running for president in 2020, wants Facebook to be broken up.
角逐2020年总统竞选的参议员伊丽莎白·沃伦（Elizabeth Warren）希望拆分Facebook。
（1）run for president，竞选总统。Run for除了本身“奔跑”的意思，还能表示“竞选”的意思。经济学人曾今用这个词描写过川普竞选总统：WHEN Donald Trump announced that he was running for president in June 2015, he was dismissed as a joke.（当2015年6月川普宣布他要竞选总统是，他被误认为是开玩笑。）
