前言
定窯是北宋五大名窯之一，創燒歷史不晚於隋代，源起或在北朝；經晚唐五代發展至北宋達到高峰；金元時期為其餘緒，歷時達700餘年。定窯產品以“白如玉，薄如紙，聲如磬”為主要特點。北宋時定窯製作精湛，瓷質瑩潤，風格古樸高雅，裝飾絢麗，有“定州花瓷甌，顏色天下白”的美譽。
定窯在釉色上呈現了一種白中泛青、泛黃的靈動跳躍感，並注重吸收絲織、刺繡、繪畫、書法、銅鏡、金銀器等藝術門類的有益元素，在裝飾內容與技法上達到了登峰造極的地步，並曾一度為宮廷燒造御用瓷器。支圈覆燒迭置法的發明和印花工藝等製作工藝的改革創新，極大地提高了生產效率，影響了包括景德鎮在內的諸多窯廠，形成了地跨南北的定窯體系，奠定了其在中國陶瓷史上的崇高地位。
源起—北朝至隋唐
20世紀50年代，有關專家在古定州範圍內澗磁村紅土埝早期青瓷窯廠採集到30餘件標本，經研究為北朝末至隋代。後經專家對河北古窯址進行詳細考察，結合河北整體瓷業發展狀況，推定定窯的燒瓷歷史應不晚於隋代。

高峰—北宋
宋定瓷胎薄質細，釉色瑩潤。造型豐富，既有生活實用品，又不乏佛教用品。裝飾技法成熟，刻花、劃花、印花精美。 首創支圈覆燒法。大量出土的“官”、“新官”、“尚藥局”、“尚食局”款器，彰顯了其曾為貢瓷的特殊身份。除白瓷外，還兼燒黑釉、醬釉、綠釉等珍稀顏色釉瓷。定瓷以其成熟的工 藝和美侖美奐的品質位列北宋五大名窯。

餘緒——金元
金元時期是定瓷餘緒。由於連年戰亂，大量瓷業技業技工遷移，加之高質量瓷土逐漸減少枯竭，導致定窯瓷器質量嚴重下降。施加化妝土的剔花作昴日見增多，而細白瓷越來越少，日用粗瓷成為主要產品，定窯由高峰下落。
